Real Estate Practice Closes On Aruba Marriott, Among Largest Deals in Caribbean Lodging History
The Real Estate practice group of Cooley Godward Kronish LLP has acted as counsel on one of the largest deals in Caribbean lodging history. Cooley attorneys represented Caribbean Real Estate Opportunity Fund 2005, L.P. in its acquisition of the 413-room Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in Aruba. The acquisition closed on November 14, 2006.

The heavily structured transaction involved significant negotiation and coordination with seller’s counsel, as well as with local advisors to the Fund on legal and structuring issues covering U.S., Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba law.

Marriott will continue to manage the property under a long-term management agreement with the new owners. The resort features 20 suites with direct ocean views, a 17,000-square-foot casino, and 11,000 square feet of meeting and banquet space. The new owners plan to renovate and reposition the property.

“This significant transaction is another example of the market leadership our real estate practice has developed in the Caribbean and Central America region,” said Gary M. Kravetz, Partner in the Real Estate practice at Cooley Godward Kronish. The group previously led the largest real property transaction in the history of Puerto Rico and is active in various additional property and development initiatives throughout the region.

HARRINGTON, HOPPE & MITCHELL PARTNER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FROM BOY SCOUTS`
Attorney Ned C. Gold, a partner at Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, Ltd. and a long-time Scouting leader, has received the Silver Sage Award from Philmont Scout Ranch, a national Boy Scout camp in New Mexico and the largest camp in the world.

Gold, a veteran Greater Western Reserve Council Scouter, is a native of Santa Fe, N.M., and founder of the Philmont Staff Association, now a 3,000-member organization that supports the ranch. The Association membership includes such former Philmont staff members as Donald Rumsfeld, world explorer/aviator Steve Fossett and its current president, Ed Pease, former speaker pro-temp of the U.S. House of Representatives. Owned and operated by the Boy Scouts of America, Philmont is nestled in the Sangre de Christo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico and is attended by over 20,000 Scouts a year. The camp has a staff of more than 1,000.

In determining the recipient of the award, the selection committee noted Gold’s lifetime dedication to Philmont, its programs and to Scouting.

“Ned has devoted his life to the love of Scouting, and has done so much for Philmont and the Staff Association,” said Gary A. Erlinger, Greater Western Reserve Council Executive. “He is such a worthy recipient of this honor.”

Gold, who has been a member of the Boy Scouts since 1949, is an Eagle Scout and the recipient of the Silver Beaver and the Silver Antelope Awards for his service as an adult Scouter.

In his youth, Gold served six years on the Philmont staff, including three years as a camp director, and later realized his dream of creating a staff association that would serve

Philmont and Scouting through its membership. He served as the Association’s first president and then served 27 years on its executive committee. In addition, Gold has served on the executive boards of the Western Alaska Council, Western Reserve Council and the Greater Western Reserve Council as well as on the Central Region executive board. He also is now an assistant den leader for his grandson’s Cub Den in Cortland.

As a lawyer, Gold has practiced law in Ohio for 40 years, specializing in legal matters related to labor and employment. He is certified as a specialist in labor and employment law by the Ohio State Bar Association.

Gold graduated from St. Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in 1963 and earned his juris doctorate there in 1966. He later served as a U.S. Air Force captain in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps.

In 2005, Gold was named an Ohio Super Lawyer by Law and Politics magazine, which annually recognizes the top lawyers in several states.

In addition to his work with Scouting, Gold sits on the boards of several community organizations, including the Red Cross, Hospice of the Valley, Beatitude House, Christ Episcopal Church Foundation, Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services Foundation and Warren Development Association .
