Fenwick & West Honored by API Legal Outreach for Pro Bono Efforts
Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach (API) recently presented Fenwick & West with its "Legal Impact Award," in honor of the firm's sponsorship of Laureen Laglagaron, the firm's API Equal Works Justice Fellow, and our outstanding contributions to the organization's immigration outreach and education programs. API Legal Outreach is a local, non-profit organization that serves the legal needs of low-income individuals from the Asian Pacific Islander communities.

As a multi-lingual advocate fluent in Tagalog and French, and conversant in Cebuano, Laureen Laglagaron—through her sponsoring agency Asian Pacific Islander (API) Legal Outreach—works to provide direct legal services and rights training to the Greater Bay Area's sizeable low-income Filipino immigrant community. Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian immigrant population in the Bay Area. However, the dearth of culturally and linguistically appropriate, low-cost or no-fee immigration legal services has led to a proliferation of fraudulent immigration providers preying on low-income Filipino immigrants. Ms. Laglagaron's project aims to protect immigrant consumers by providing direct legal services to low-income immigrants, educating the community regarding their legal rights to prevent victimization, and litigating against fraudulent immigration consultants.

As an Equal Justice Works sponsor, we have not only provided Laureen with advice, outreach, and logistical support but also dedicated investment to her project. Recently, Fenwick & West hosted three immigration law training sessions for both lawyers and non-lawyers geared specifically to address the needs of Filipino immigrants. Moreover, the firm continues to provide technical support to API Legal Outreach, printing over 3000 color outreach brochures in both Tagalog and English.

In August, Fenwick & West took a further step toward supporting the work at API Legal Outreach. Carlos Orellana and Kate Fritz are advocating on behalf of a survivor of human trafficking in a civil litigation case. By utilizing the firm's extensive legal expertise on an individual case, Fenwick continues to build on the current financial and technical support it currently provides to API Legal Outreach.
