Morris, Manning & Martin Files Patent on Legal Project Management System
Atlanta-based law firm Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP has taken another step toward patenting its pioneering Legal Project Management System.

The firm’s system is designed to improve communication, enhance efficiency, and provide transparency in the delivery of legal services, while increasing the corporate client’s involvement and control over the timing and costs needed to complete a legal project. A regular (non-provisional) patent application has been filed to seek patent protection for various novel aspects of applying project management methodologies to the rendering of legal services, as well as monitoring, tracking, and reporting progress to attorneys and clients in a more effective and client-visible manner.

“While project management is widely used in the business world, we feel confident that several aspects of our Legal Project Management System are new inventions,” said John Harris, the partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group who is handling the patent application. “We believe that our particular system provides a comprehensive approach that effectively captures, communicates, and tracks a legal project’s unique requirements and allows for more real-time monitoring of progress, and making updates and changes during the life of the project.”

The firm is currently using aspects of the system for transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property (such as patent and trademark prosecution), litigation/dispute resolution, and venture capital financing deals. The novel aspects of the system have broad applicability to many different types of legal services.

“The system improves communication and gives our clients a clear idea of the legal matter’s status through every step of the transaction,” added Grant Collingsworth, a co-inventor of the system. “The data collected, and the resulting project plan, allow for an ongoing stream of information between the legal service provider and the client.”

“Morris, Manning & Martin’s system helps to create a road map of a legal matter, defining the tasks, assignments and agreements, allowing us to identify and utilize the best and most efficient resources,” added Linda Klausing, the firm’s Director of Legal Project Management and a co nventor of the System.

Jennings Says U.S. Steel Project Not a Done Deal
Thomas J. Jennings, Special Counsel in the Environmental Department in the Firm's Philadelphia office and U.S. Steel attorney, commented on the Falls, PA water and sewer board approval of a resolution supporting Morrisville, PA's grant application.

The state grant is worth $4.75 million, and $1.6 million would be contributed from U.S. Steel. The combined $6.4 million would fund a sanitary sewer pipeline construction that would run through U.S. Steel's existing facilities and ultimately connect to Morrisville's treatment plant, where sewage would be treated.

Mr. Jennings said that if the grants come through, construction would generate economic development and jobs. He suggested the board act quickly because of the state's December 1 grant application deadline.

"It's not a done deal," Mr. Jennings said. "If one party's not happy, the project will not get done." Mr. Jennings said if it is not done, U.S. Steel would keep treating the approximate 65,000 gallons of sanitary sewage a day. That amount, combined with the 375,000 gallons per day generated from Falls Keystone Industrial Port Complex, could be handled at Morrisville's plant, Mr. Jennings said. He also said that the availability of public sewage could potentially attract new businesses.
