Firm Ranked First in Summer Associate Satisfaction
Thompson Hine LLP, a corporate law firm with offices across Ohio and in Atlanta; New York City; Washington, D.C.; and Brussels, Belgium, received high marks in summer associate satisfaction according to The American Lawyer's Student Edition.

The results come from an anonymous survey of summer associates at 202 law firms. Eligible summer associates are first- and second-year law students who worked as law clerks for at least three weeks during the summer. Job satisfaction was determined by questions about qualities such as how interesting the assigned work was, how much concrete or "real life" work was assigned, how capable summer associate training and guidance programs were and the estimated desire to accept a position from the firm if it were offered. They were also asked to rate the firm overall as a desired place to work. Thompson Hine came out on top in two cities, Cincinnati and Cleveland.

"We consider summer associates a very important part of our firm, and our summer associate program is an integral part of our focus on attracting and retaining top legal talent from across the country," says Jennifer Irwin, Associate Director of Lawyer Recruiting & Development. "In addition to the excellent scores our Cleveland and Cincinnati offices received, our national ranking places our firm in a very competitive position to continue to attract talented lawyers," continued Irwin. "We are pleased that our summer associates have had such rewarding experiences at Thompson Hine and we look forward to maintaining our strong reputation in the legal community.

Office Spots to Meet and Mingle
Thelen Reid [Brown Raysman & Steiner] also has added more spots in its 701 8th St. N.W. office in D.C., where it has been since June 2005, for employees to mix and mingle. In fact, since more research is being done electronically, the firm transformed its library, which had once been a quiet academic research area. It did away with the carrels, cut down on the number of shelves and added soft seating.

"It's more of a social space than a work space," says Andrew Ness, managing partner of the firm's Washington office.

The firm, which moved to the space after spending 15 years on Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, also redesigned its lunch area to be a much more open space with a colorful backdrop on one side, a glass wall on the other side and a balcony that shoots off the main room for outdoor seating. Employees also can mingle at some of the smaller lounge areas on each floor of the office.

"If your office looks staid and old-fashioned, with a lot of dark wood and paintings of hunting scenes on the walls, that sends a different message than having a very modern clean design," Ness says. "You're seen as a more forward-looking, more current, more 21st-century firm.
