Manatt Organizes Subprime Mortgage Industry Task Force
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, the national law and consulting firm, announced today the organization of a subprime mortgage industry task force to harness its resources relating to this industry. Manatt's Subprime Mortgage Industry Task Force has as its basis the firm's vast experience working with subprime mortgage companies covering corporate, finance, legislative advocacy, bankruptcy, and litigation matters.

"We have been involved in the subprime industry since its inception, and understand the business and the current challenges," said Ellen Marshall, Co-Chair of Manatt's Banking and Specialty Finance Practice Group, who has been advising subprime companies since the early 1990s and is spearheading the new practice group. "We are aligning all of our expertise for the benefit of industry clients and related interests," she added.

Manatt attorneys on the Task Force represent a range of disciplines from the firm's key practice areas and practice on a national platform from offices in California, New York, and Washington, D.C. Though Orange County is the home of several major market participants, Ms. Marshall emphasized the need to reach out to the subprime mortgage industry nationally.

Partners providing counsel in business transactions along with Ms. Marshall will be Gordon M. Bava, Harold P. Reichwald, Robert J. Sherman, and Barbara S. Polsky. Covering compliance issues will be Charles E. Washburn, Los Angeles. Advertising will be covered by Clayton S. Friedman. Covering taxation will be Donald J. Fitzgerald, Michael A. Lehmann, and Jeff A. Mannisto. Litigation will be covered by Claudia Callaway, Steven F. Reich, and Brad W. Seiling. Bankruptcy issues will be covered by Ivan L. Kallick. Finally, Tom McMorrow, Phyllis Marshall, and Fred Main will act as legislative advocates. The team includes other attorneys, in various practice areas, who bring extraordinary familiarity with the subprime industry. Several have in-house experience in the industry, and many work regularly with these clients.

"Manatt is uniquely positioned, close to the action, in Sacramento, Albany and Washington, D.C., to track events where today's mortgage lending, banking and policy intersect," said Tom McMorrow, a partner in Manatt's Sacramento office. "We bring history and perspective, and can see beyond the headlines to the opportunities," he added.

Manatt has represented several of the largest subprime lenders, as well as lenders to and servicers for the industry. Ms. Marshall has represented Option One Mortgage since its inception, along with others in the industry. Mr. Friedman represented Ameriquest in its negotiated settlement with multiple state attorneys general concerning its advertising and disclosure practices. Manatt is special securitization counsel to New Century Mortgage in its bankruptcy proceedings and is counsel to the investment bank advising People's Choice Home Loan in its bankruptcy.

Holland & Knight Establishes Endowed Scholarship at Florida A&M University College of Law
Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that the law firm has recently established an endowed scholarship at Florida A&M University College of Law. The annual scholarship, the first of its kind at the law school, will provide the selected second-year law student with in-state tuition for one year as well as an offer of employment as a summer associate with the firm following the second year of law school.

"Holland & Knight is committed to supporting Florida's future lawyers and law schools such as Florida A&M University College of Law," said Bill Wilson, executive partner of the firm's Orlando office. "As a law firm with Florida roots and a strong Florida presence, we understand the importance for our state to provide talented law students with opportunities to receive a quality legal education."

"Holland & Knight is proud to establish this endowed scholarship at Florida A&M University College of Law," said Martha Barnett, former president of the American Bar Association and a partner in the firm's Tallahassee office. "Like our law firm, Florida A&M University is a leader with a longstanding tradition of providing opportunities for minority students."

"This scholarship demonstrates another step in Holland & Knight's partnering with Florida A&M University College of Law," said Albert Tellechea, a partner in the firm's Central Florida Litigation Group. "Our firm's involvement in FAMU's Moot Court Program and the recent creation of the Holland & Knight Lecture Series challenge students to develop the skills expected of leaders in the legal profession."

Each year, the scholarship Selection Committee at Florida A&M University College of Law will evaluate upcoming second-year students based on the following criteria: faculty evaluation and recommendations, academic credentials and community service involvement. The Committee will then recommend a worthy candidate to Holland & Knight's review board, comprised of representatives from the firm's Orlando-based Real Estate, Legislative and Business practice groups, which will make the final selection before the Fall semester.

About Florida A&M University College of Law: The College of Law, which admitted its first class in Fall 2002, has committed to the following mission: To provide a law program with high academic standards that produce excellent legal professionals who demonstrate professionalism, provide public service, enhance justice and promote scholarship; to provide a program that offers both full-time and part-time learning opportunities to students; and, consistent with the enabling legislation, to provide opportunities for minorities to attain representation within the legal profession.
