Dorsey & Whitney Attorney Daniel M. Miller Named to Canada’s ‘Top 40 Lawyers Under 40’
Global law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP today announced that Vancouver partner Daniel M. Miller, 35, was named one of Canada’s top 40 lawyers under age 40 by legal industry publication Lexpert. A panel of chairpersons, managing partners and other executives from law firms and corporations in Canada reviewed reader-submitted nominations to make the top lawyer selections.

Miller has extensive experience advising Canadian companies on U.S. public and private securities offerings, including offerings under the Multijurisdictional Disclosure System (MJDS), Rule 144A, Regulations S and Regulation D. Miller also regularly advises U.S. and Canadian clients on corporate governance matters, including Sarbanes-Oxley, and U.S. corporate and securities laws applicable to foreign companies operating in the United States.

“We’re proud that Dan – one of the few lawyers practicing exclusively U.S. law in Canada – has been recognized for his contributions to the legal and business communities in Canada,” said Jeffrey A. Peterson, head of the Dorsey Vancouver office. “Dan has devoted himself to his clients’ success. This honor reflects his first-rate legal ability, dedication to client service, business insight, integrity and leadership.”

Miller earned his LL.B./M.B.A degree from the University of Toronto. Prior to joining Dorsey in 2005, he was associated with another major law firm, where he focused on U.S.-Canadian cross-border securities transactions and mergers and acquisitions.

Supreme Court Rules for Covington Client in Immigration Case
The Supreme Court handed down a favorable decision in Lopez v. Gonzales, a significant immigration case in which Covington represented the petitioner, Jose Antonio Lopez. The Court's opinion, written by Justice Souter, holds that state drug convictions do not count as "aggravated felonies" for purposes of federal immigration law unless the offense is punishable as a felony under the federal drug laws.

Conviction of an aggravated felony renders an immigrant ineligible for withholding of deportation, asylum, or U.S. citizenship and has other adverse consequences. The Court's decision today reverses the lower court's ruling that Mr. Lopez's conviction on a simple drug possession charge was an "aggravated felony" for immigration purposes.

Partner Robert Long argued the case and led the Covington team, which included Theodore Metzler, Edward Bruce, Nick Cartier, Emily Henn, and Emin Toro. Mr. Long chairs the firm’s appellate and Supreme Court litigation group and has argued 14 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

D.C. Government Relations Professional McCausland Quoted on Iraq in Post, on CBS News
Dr. Jeffrey D. In the CBS appearance, McCausland was interviewed by a correspondent in Baghdad on the situation there, as part of the coverage of President Bush's meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
