Bingham Expands Labor and Employment Group in San Francisco
Bingham McCutchen LLP announces the arrival of Walter Stella as a partner in the San Francisco office. Stella joins Bingham’s Labor and Employment Practice Group from Shook Hardy & Bacon. The firm also announces the appointment of Silicon Valley partner Wendy Lazerson as co-leader of the labor and employment group.

Having focused almost exclusively on employment issues in his 15-year career, Stella has built a successful practice that focuses on both employment litigation and counseling. He has represented clients in a wide range of employment matters, including wage-and-hour class actions, harassment and discrimination suits, and trade-secret theft. Stella has developed an excellent reputation as an employment lawyer in the Bay Area legal community, representing a variety of local high-tech companies in employment counseling and litigation.

“The addition of Walter further bolsters our strong labor and employment practice,” said San Francisco partner David Balabanian, chair of Bingham’s litigation area. “With 50 lawyers, our labor and employment group is already effective, and Walter will make it even stronger." Bingham’s labor and employment group provides a full range of labor, employment and benefit services to large multinational companies as well as to small businesses.

“Walter has proven himself to be an energetic and ambitious lawyer with a growing practice,” added San Francisco Managing Partner Geoff Howard. “He is a good match for our office.”

For Stella, the attraction to Bingham was the caliber of its employment and labor practice, the group’s synergy with other key practices as well as the firm’s national and international reach and momentum.

“I’m excited to add to Bingham’s employment and litigation bench strength and see great opportunities with the firm’s financial institutions and life sciences client base, as well as its Pacific Rim practice. It’s a great time to join this firm on the move,” said Stella, who is actively involved in the Northern California Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He is a 1990 graduate of Cornell Law School.

In addition to Stella’s arrival, Bingham announces the appointment of Silicon Valley partner Wendy Lazerson co-leader of the labor and employment group, replacing Los Angeles partner Debra Fischer, who assumed the role of deputy chair of Bingham’s litigation area.

In her more than 20-year career in employment law, Lazerson has advised employers on the particularities of California and federal law in all matters related to the workplace. She also has represented employers in class action and other litigation, arbitration and mediation of claims arising in the workplace.

“I am delighted to assume a leadership role at this exciting time for Bingham's labor and employment group,” Lazerson said. “Our group is in a growth mode. We are working on sophisticated mergers and acquisitions at one end of the spectrum, while being fully engaged in high-stakes class action work, and doing everything in between.”

Lazerson added that Stella is “an excellent addition” to the group and the San Francisco office. “In addition to being an entrepreneurial lawyer, he is dedicated to mentoring our associates, a quality we value. I look forward to continued growth and development of our talented team.”

Womble Carlyle Named 2007 Best Law Firm for Women by Working Mother Magazine and Flex-Time Lawyers
Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC today announced it has been named as one of the top "Best Law Firms for Women" by Working Mother magazine and Flex Time Lawyers LLC. A new initiative from the leading advocates for work-life balance and women-friendly policies, Best Law Firms for Women honored 50 winning firms for their commitment to the retention and advancement of female talent.

Working Mother magazine selected law firms based on survey data collected earlier this year by Flex-Time Lawyers LLC and Working Mother Media. For this inaugural survey, Working Mother measured firms on a variety of factors, including representation of women in leadership positions, compensation and benefits, parental leave, childcare, flexibility options, treatment of women staff as well as women lawyers, and programs to help train, retain and advance women.

"We are honored to be recognized for this award by Working Mother magazine," said Gloria Agard, Womble Carlyle's Director of Diversity and Workplace Initiatives. "Womble Carlyle strives to create a healthy work/life balance for all of its attorneys and employees and we are proud to be set apart in this area."

Womble Carlyle will be profiled in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine, and the firm will be honored at a special awards event on September 24, 2007.

"Since its founding, Working Mother magazine has been the champion of progressive, women-friendly changes in the workplace," said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. "Every year we see substantive advances in companies' policies across the country, and we are so excited to be able to pair with Flex-Time Lawyers to celebrate change in a field that has historically struggled to support women and their life choices. I commend Womble Carlyle for taking the lead for women lawyers.

Bernard Jones Selected to Serve on ACS Government Relations Committee
Bernard Jones, an attorney with the law firm of McAfee & Taft, has been selected to serve on the American Cancer Society Government Relations Committee for the High Plains Division, a six-state area including Hawaii, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

As a member of the committee, Jones will assist in the decision-making process for advocacy issues that impact the American Cancer Society. These issues range from general health care issues to tobacco laws and breast and colon cancer screening.

For Jones, a lawyer with a keen interest in the legal issues surrounding governmental relations and lobbying, the decision to serve was an easy one. “My grandmother has beat breast cancer twice, so cancer prevention and policy is something that has affected me personally,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of a team that intends to do something about the suffering and death caused by cancer. It will be a great opportunity to serve and make a difference.”

The Oklahoma City native is a graduate of Bishop McGuiness High School, Southern Methodist University and the University of Notre Dame Law School. Jones worked as a litigation associate with an Ohio law firm for two years before returning to Oklahoma and joining McAfee & Taft, the state’s largest law firm, in 2006. His practice currently encompasses the areas of general/commercial litigation, as well as labor and employment, family law and products liability litigation.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the Society has 13 regional Divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
