Fish & Richardson to host patent law and litigation seminar in Korea
Fish & Richardson represents a variety of leading Korean companies in patent prosecution and litigation matters in the United States. Most recently, the firm won a major International Trade Commission (ITC) ruling for Hynix Semiconductor, Inc. and Hynix Semiconductor America, Inc.

In an effort to update South Korean professionals on the latest U.S. patent and litigation issues, Fish & Richardson will host a December 12 seminar on "United States Patent Law and Litigation," in Seoul, Korea. F&R faculty presenting include Roger Borovoy (Silicon Valley), John Dragseth (Twin Cities), Richard Horning (Silicon Valley), Michael McKeon (DC), Brian Nester (DC), Choongsoo Park, Ph.D (DC), W. Karl Renner (DC), Alan Smith (Boston), and Jeffrey Whieldon (Boston and DC).

Co-sponsored by the Technology Incubation Network at Seoul National University's College of Engineering, the one-day seminar is designed for lawyers, engineers, and business persons who manage or have responsibility for U.S. patent litigation, prosecution, and legal opinions.

The program addresses strategic issues in understanding and handling patent litigation in the United States; U.S. law on Opinions of Counsel, and how Opinions of Counsel can help or hurt you; and key tactics for getting the best patent protection in the U.S.

Fish & Richardson's Kelly Kordzik presents nanoTX'06
Kelly Kordzik, Fish & Richardson principal in the Austin office, recently helped present nanoTX`06, a world class nanotechnology conference and trade expo. The event was held September 26-28 at the Dallas Convention Center during International Nanotechnology Week.

Kordzik is also the president of the Texas Nanotechnology Initiative (TNI), which was the presenting organization for the conference. Another sponsor included The NanoBusiness Alliance (NBA), led by Sean Murdock.

The conference's theme this year was "The Promise of Tomorrow -The Business of Nanotechnology," and was kicked-off with opening remarks by H. Ross Perot of Dallas, internationally renowned business leader and two-time Presidential candidate. Over 150 top minds of science and business from 30 different countries spoke at the September conference, and the exhibit hall featured nanotechnology-related exhibits.

There was also a special Nobel Laureates Legends Reception held during the three-day conference and was dedicated to the memory of the late Jack Kilby and Rick Smalley. The private networking reception featured six Nobel Laureates who openly discussed their work and the future of nanotechnology.

Governor Rick Perry also announced during the conference that the State of Texas was awarded a Nanoelectronics Research Institute by the U.S. federal government.

The nanoTX`06 conference culminated on September 28 with a private reception hosted by Kordzik, which included a special appearance by HRH the Duke of York, Prince Andrew.

Fish & Richardson client receives 2006 Nobel Peace Prize
Fish & Richardson's client, Muhammad Yunus, founder of Bangladeshi Grameen Bank, has been awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his creation of an international "microcredit" loan program to poor recipients.

In the mid 1970s, Yunus, an economist on a field trip with his students at Chittagong University, learned that artisans were borrowing money at an interest rate of 10 percent or higher per week in order to purchase the necessary materials for their trade and subsequent sale, often leaving them with little or no profit. Several years later Yunus formed the Grameen Bank ("village bank") with his own money. Today, Grameen Bank boasts over 1,000 branches serving more than 2 million borrowers in more than 37,000 villages throughout the nation. 97 percent of the borrowers are women and more than 98 percent of the loans are repaid. The Grameen model is now being used in 58 other countries, including the United States and Canada.

Fish & Richardson Wins $34 Million for Power Integrations
Fish & Richardson P.C. has won a major verdict for Power Integrations (OTC: POWI), the leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for power conversion, in its patent-infringement lawsuit against Fairchild Semiconductor. On October 10, 2006, a jury found that Fairchild had willfully infringed all four Power Integrations patents asserted in the case, and awarded Power Integrations damages of nearly $34 million.

A second trial, scheduled to begin on December 4, 2006, will address Fairchild's challenges to the validity of the infringed Power Integrations patents. The patents are presumed to be valid, and Fairchild cannot prevail unless it proves the patents are invalid by clear and convincing evidence. Should Fairchild be unable to prove the patents invalid, Power Integrations intends to seek an injunction against the continued manufacture, importation and sale of the infringing parts, as well as enhancement of the damages award based on the jury's finding of willful infringement.

All 33 Fairchild parts asserted to have infringed were found to infringe and may be subject to an injunction. These parts are currently found in such end products as cellphone chargers, DVD players, TV set-top boxes, LCD monitors, and others.

Power Integrations' trial team was lead by Frank Scherkenbach and Howard Pollack, principals of Fish & Richardson. Fairchild Semiconductor was represented by Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. This is the latest in a series of trials that Fish & Richardson has won for Power Integrations since taking on its first case for the company, Power Integrations, Inc. v. Motorola, Inc., in 1997.

"Power Integrations respects the intellectual property of others and the company expects its competitors to do the same," said Fish & Richardson's Frank Scherkenbach. "This is our third trial win in our effort to protect Power Integrations' intellectual property against unlawful infringement by competitors. We look forward to continue working with the company to protect their IP rights going forward."

The Power Integrations, Inc. v. Motorola, Inc. case, which involved two other Power Integrations patents relating to various aspects of chips used in high-voltage AC-to-DC power conversion, was named one of the most significant intellectual property cases of the year in 1999 by the National Law Journal. The jury found willful infringement in the case and awarded $32.3 million in damages to Power Integrations, the largest patent jury verdict ever awarded in Delaware at the time.

In August 2006, Fish & Richardson won another important case for Power Integrations, Power Integrations, Inc. v. System General Corporation and System General USA. The firm asserted several other Power Integrations patents relating to circuits for PWM controllers before the International Trade Commission. Fish & Richardson again prevailed at trial where the patents were found to be valid and infringed. The ITC's final order in this case became effective on October 11, 2006.
