Baker & Daniels Lawyer Wins Journalism Award
Ron Gifford, a partner with Baker & Daniels LLP, won the Best in Business award from The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) for his column, “There Ought To Be A Law,” which appears monthly in the Indianapolis Business Journal. That’s right: although Gifford is a full-time attorney, he won an award that usually honors business journalists.

Nominated by the Indianapolis Business Journal, Gifford has been writing the column for the weekly business publication since 2001. His informative and often irreverent commentary has tackled legal issues ranging from local property taxes to Anna Nicole Smith's Supreme Court case.

“With insight and flair, Gifford used his column to bring readers inside Indiana politics, from jury selection to the class-action business,” one SABEW judge commented.

Gifford focuses his practice at Baker & Daniels on government affairs and administrative law, with a special interest in economic development and gaming. Gifford has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America since 2005 and Indiana Super Lawyers since 2004.

The SABEW’s Best in Business contest got its start in 1995 to help set standards and recognize role models for outstanding business journalism. The contest recognizes the best sections or publications, as well as the best breaking news, enterprise and projects reporting in business journalism. Winners share the award equally, without ranking, in the respective categories — breaking news, enterprise reporting, project reporting and column writing.

The Best in Business contest received 761 entries from daily and weekly newspapers, magazines, wire services and Web sites, and honored 85 individuals with awards. Awards were presented in Anaheim, Calif., during SABEW's 44th annual conference.

Baker & Daniels CEO Brian Burke to Step Down
Brian K. Burke, chairman and CEO of Baker & Daniels LLP, has announced that he will step down from the firm’s top job on Dec. 31, 2007.

Baker & Daniels already has begun the process of choosing a successor and will have a new chair and CEO in place on Jan. 1, 2008. Burke will remain with the firm as a partner and assist with the leadership transition.

Although Burke’s term was not set to expire until the end of 2008, he told his Baker & Daniels colleagues that the firm’s strength and ongoing growth put it in a good position to initiate a leadership change now.

“Through the hard work and dedication of everyone associated with Baker & Daniels, the firm is extraordinarily well-positioned for future success,” said Burke, who has held the chairman and CEO role for 15 years. “The strategic investments we have made in our national practices, our Washington, D.C.-based consulting practice and in our China practice have complemented the very strong position we enjoy in our home state of Indiana.”

Following well-established guidelines, the firm’s nominating committee has begun the selection process to nominate Burke’s successor. That nomination will be presented to the firm’s partnership and voted on this fall.

Burke is credited with leading Baker & Daniels' expansion geographically across Indiana and to China. He helped build the firm to include more than 375 lawyers and consulting professionals. Burke also helped to develop and implement initiatives to improve and expand client service, accommodate flexible work schedules for Baker & Daniels attorneys, raise the firm’s visibility in and support of the communities it serves, and plan for the firm’s future.

“While I have thoroughly enjoyed my tenure as our firm’s chair and CEO, I believe a leadership change at this time will bring important new perspectives and fresh insights and serve as a catalyst that will guide the firm to new levels of success,” said Burke. “I look forward to assisting my successor in every possible way and to continue being a part of this wonderful organization.”

Burke's legal practice focuses on civil litigation where he concentrates in business torts and unfair competition, employment, intellectual property, securities and products liability. Burke, a certified registered civil mediator in Indiana, has been honored in The Best Lawyers in America and Indiana Super Lawyers. He is president of the Indianapolis City Market Corporation's Board of Directors and immediate past president of the Boy Scouts of America's Crossroads of American Council.
