Four Senior IP Lawyers to Join Jones Day Hong Kong Office
The international law firm Jones Day today announced the addition of three partners and one of counsel to the Firm's intellectual property practice in Hong Kong.

Peggy Cheung, Anita Leung, and Chiang Ling Li, partners, and Helen Tang, of counsel, will join Jones Day over the next few months from Baker & McKenzie's Hong Kong/China Intellectual Property Group.

"The addition of these four veteran IP lawyers marks a pivotal point in the growth of our Hong Kong IP team and adds to our already-strong IP practice in Greater China," said Barbara Mok, partner-in-charge of Jones Day's Hong Kong office. "Their expertise will significantly boost our full-service IP offerings in the areas of contentious, transactional and trademark IP law."

Mrs. Cheung has practiced in the Hong Kong office of Baker & McKenzie since 1994. She has focused on areas of law pertaining to trademark registration and portfolio management, patent registration and general IP advisory. Mrs. Cheung played an active role in lobbying the Hong Kong Government on the Trade Marks Ordinance and the Trade Marks Rules when these were amended in 2003. She sits on a number of IP committees, including being the past President and current committee member of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Marks Practitioners, Councellor of the Asia Patent Attorneys Association, Hong Kong Chapter. She earned her law degree from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and her LL.M. from the University of London in 1988.

Ms. Leung joined the Hong Kong office of Baker & McKenzie in 1987 as a trainee and made her way up to partnership there. She specializes in Hong Kong IP enforcement and litigation, product regulatory issues and commercial IP, focusing on licensing, franchising, distribution, advertising, sponsorship and transactional support and due diligence. Ms. Leung played an active role in lobbying the Hong Kong Government on the Copyright (Amendment) Ordinance, the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Ordinance and the Companies Ordinance (company name registration issues). She sits on various IP committees, including the Law Society IP Committee and is the immediate past Chair and current Co-Vice Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Leung earned her law degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1986 and her P.C.LL in 1987.

Ms. Li has been with Baker & McKenzie since 1994 focusing on China intellectual property, technology and pharmaceutical law, specializing in portfolio management, enforcement and litigation, and licensing, franchising, distribution, advertising, sponsorship and transaction support. Ms. Li worked closely with various intellectual property and pharmaceutical industry organizations and played active roles in lobbying for legal and regulatory reforms of various China intellectual property laws and regulations (including the latest amendment to the Chinese Trademark Law and the Trademark Examination Guidelines) throughout the last 13 years. Ms. Li has been appointed arbitrator by four prestigious arbitration bodies, viz, the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center, the Asia Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center and the World Intellectual Property Organization Arbitration and Mediation Center . She earned her bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Toronto (B.Sc., 1989) and her law degrees from Queen's University (LLB, 1992) and University of London (LL.M., 1998). She is also a registered pharmacist.

Ms. Tang joined Baker & McKenzie's Hong Kong office in 1999. Before that, she practiced in commercial law for many years, and immediately before joining Baker & McKenzie, she was a senior solicitor with the Intellectual Property Department of the Hong Kong Government ("HKIPD") for two years. She specializes in regional trade mark registration, strategic planning and management of international trade mark portfolio. During her employment with the HKIPD, she was a hearing officer and also worked closely with the drafting committee in the passage of the current Trade Marks Ordinance and the Trade Marks Rules. She is currently the secretary of the counsel committee of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Marks Practitioners. She earned her law and commerce degrees from the University of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1987. She has been named as one of Asia's leading lawyers in the IP area in the annual Asialaw Leading Lawyers Survey 2007.

These hires further solidify Jones Day's Asia IP practice as one of the largest of any full service law firm. Of the Firm's 265 IP lawyers and patent agents worldwide, more than 20 are based throughout Greater China - in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei.

U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Publishes New Patent Rules
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) published its much anticipated new rules regarding continuing application practice and limitations on the number of claims presented for examination. The new rules are allegedly being adopted to reduce the number of continuing applications so that the USPTO may eliminate the present back-log of new patent applications waiting to be examined. The new rules are also being adopted to ease the examination process for examiners by having applicants provide more focus and clarity regarding their inventions. The new rules go into full effect on November 1, 2007.

Jones and Salzman named "Up & Coming Lawyers"
Blackwell Sanders Partners Kimberly Jones and Kirstin Pace Salzman were named as two of Missouri’s “rising stars” and were recognized in recent issue of Missouri Lawyers Weekly. The 10th annual “Up and Coming Lawyers” issue honored 35 Missouri attorneys.

There were a record number of nominations this year, which a selection committee read through in search of those attorneys who “do something extra to distinguish them as rising bar members.” Each honoree shows exemplary dedication to the practice of law and a commitment to making their communities better places to live.

Kim Jones has become an authority on class and collective actions; her successful national practice has led her to spend substantial time in California in recent years. She has been successful where California attorneys have found defending these actions to be difficult. In addition to her successful defense of companies, she is also a superb trainer, proactively working with clients to show them how to follow the law and reduce or eliminate the risks associated with lawsuits and trials. Kim’s commitment to fairness extends beyond her representation of clients. Kim is the chair of Blackwell Sanders’ Diversity Committee. Kim is a board member of The Central Exchange, Kansas City's premier organization providing leadership development opportunities for women. Kim also sits on the Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign of Kansas City.

Kirstin Salzman has distinguished herself as a leading transactional and securities attorney and has earned the respect and admiration of clients and adverse parties alike. Her breadth and depth of securities and public companies experience is a unique asset for someone her age. Kirstin counts among her clients YRC Worldwide, NovaStar Financial and Tortoise Capital Advisors. In her work for Tortoise, Kirstin has worked on several registration statements to register the offering of hundreds of millions of dollars of securities. Kirstin also regularly gives legal guidance on compliance issues to public companies, and she advises the independent members of the board of directors of the UMB Scout funds. In her transaction experience, Kirstin has impressed both sides of the table. In one instance, she represented the seller in the sale of a business. At the end of the transaction, the buyer praised Kirstin’s skills and asked to work with her in the future. She had the opportunity to represent that buyer last year. After the transaction, the representative of that buyer sent an unsolicited email to firm leadership, praising Kirstin’s skills.

Both Kim & Kirstin helped to found True North, Blackwell Sanders’ Women’s Initiative. True North helps Blackwell Sanders’ female attorneys form stronger relationships and participate in leadership development activities with each other and with their female clients.

Robinson & McElwee to Host Employer Advocate Seminar
Robinson & McElwee will sponsor its first Employer Advocate Seminar on Sept. 12 at the South Charleston Ramada Plaza Hotel.

This free, half-day seminar will feature three panel discussions about the ways businesses can prepare for requests to produce electronic information, including e-mails, word processing documents, and financial data, as well as the upcoming open market for workers compensation insurance and employment practices litigation.

The electronic information panel will focus on the new responsibilities of all businesses to produce electronic information on short notice if they are sued or face a government investigation or audit.

"Most businesses need to do a better job managing their electronic information, especially e-mails and word processing documents," according to seminar coordinator Allen Prunty. "Failure to prepare beforehand to deal with these requests can cost a business tens of thousands of dollars."

The electronic information panel will discuss how businesses can better manage their electronic information in order to prepare for requests to produce this information and gain a competitive edge.

The workers compensation panel will discuss alternatives available to West Virginia employers as the workers compensation insurance market opens to competition, and the new laws affecting self-insured employers.

"Most employers do not know that they will be able to join with other businesses to establish their own workers compensation insurance company," according to Prunty.

The employment practices panel will discuss the employer-insurer relationship and how businesses can avoid claims for wrongful employment practices involving allegations of discrimination, wrongful discharge, and deliberate injuries.

Fisher & Phillips Joins Strategic HR Partners
Fisher & Phillips LLP has become a partner with Strategic HR Partners (SHRP). SHRP is a non-profit employer’s association located in the Incubator Program in the Cunningham Center in Columbus, Georgia. The new organization is offering diversified HR services to mid- and small-sized companies. Fisher & Phillips is the partner offering services in employment and labor law.

SHRP is holding a kickoff event on Thursday, August 30 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Cunningham Center at Columbus State University.

Member companies will be able to tap into resources that can review their company handbooks for legal compliance, assess their corporate culture and develop a plan for change, assist with writing job descriptions, performance evaluations, and affirmative action plans, develop compensation programs, conduct employee and customer opinion surveys, and much more. In addition, there’s an HR Hotline that members can call to discuss HR issues, a CEO Roundtable, and a HR Roundtable where member companies can discuss best practices.

In addition to Fisher & Phillips, several other companies will be offering a variety of services to employers. Membership cost to join the association varies, depending on the number of employees. Companies of any size may join.

"We are excited about filling a niche that has been lacking in our area," said Charles Little, President and CEO of SHRP. "For instance, there are a lot of mid- and small-sized companies that do not have human resource departments to keep them in compliance with state and federal laws. Our goal is to assist them. Those companies with Human Resource professionals can utilize our services in HR consultation, project management, outplacement, training and development, and professional certification."
