Lawrence B. Burke to Chair Davis Wright Tremaine’s Environmental Practice Group
The law firm of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP has appointed Lawrence B. Burke to chair the firm’s national environmental practice group. Upon formally handing the reins over to Burke, outgoing practice group chair Lynn Manolopoulos remarked, “If his many years of providing excellent service to clients are any indication, I am certain that Larry will be a terrific chair for our environmental group.”

Burke, based in DWT’s Portland office, has more than 25 years of experience in the environmental sector, a career that began with 11 years at Chevron holding various engineering and environmental positions throughout the western United States. Burke is also a registered environmental assessor in California.

Burke’s practice encompasses a wide range of environmental matters, including complex litigation involving groundwater contamination, environmental insurance coverage disputes, cases involving underground storage tanks, and cases alleging professional negligence by engineers or environmental consultants. Similarly, Burke has been involved with several governmental enforcement actions on other matters involving hazardous waste, Superfund, OSHA air and wastewater discharge requirements. He has also handled various citizen suits under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and California’s Proposition 65.

An accomplished speaker, Burke has made presentations on numerous environmental topics to professional organizations around the Pacific Northwest.

Burke received his law degree cum laude from the Loyola Law School (Los Angeles) in 1989, and received his B.S. cum laude in chemical engineering from Notre Dame in 1978. He is licensed to practice law in Oregon and California, and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts of both Oregon and California, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Cozen O’Connor Attorney David L. Ladov Appears on Law Journal Discussing Grandparents’ Rights
Cozen O’Connor member David L. Ladov recently appeared on Law Journal, WFMZ-TV 68, discussing “Grandparents’ Rights and Other Hot Topics.” Ladov served as one of five panelists discussing grandparental custody and visitation and recent rulings from the U.S. and Pennsylvania Supreme Courts. The program also looked at pre-nuptial agreements, relocation issues and irreconcilable differences. Ladov practices in the firm’s West Conshohocken office. He is co-chair of the firm’s family law practice group, concentrating his practice in all areas of domestic relations, including divorce, custody, child support, equitable distribution and abuse.

Ladov is a fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAMC) and secretary of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the AAMC, chair of the Family Law Section of the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA), former chair of the Family Law Section of the Montgomery Bar Association, and a member of the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association. He is editor of the Pennsylvania Family Lawyer, a publication of the PBA. David was named a Pennsylvania "Super Lawyer" by his peers, appearing in Philadelphia magazine and Pennsylvania Super Lawyers. He has also been selected as one of “Ten Leaders of Greater Philadelphia in Matrimonial and Divorce Law” for 2005-2006 by Digital Press International.

Ladov is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

A resident of, Blue Bell, Pa., Ladov earned his undergraduate degree from The Pennsylvania State University (B.A., with distinction, 1975) and his law degree from Emory University School of Law (J.D., 1978).

The Legal Intelligencer Features Buchanan Attorneys as 2006’s Top Lateral Hires
Six Buchanan attorneys — Alfred D'Angelo, Jr., Thomas Giotto, Robert Harper, J. Anthony Messina, John Quain and William Schorling — were featured on the cover and in the lead article of The Legal Intelligencer's special February 5, 2007, supplement, "2006's Top Lateral Hires."

According to the supplement article, titled "Top Laterals, With a Twist: Mergers Make for Big Coups in Market," "no other firm picked up more big names…than Buchanan Ingersoll when it merged with Klett Rooney." In particular, it cited the particular experience, strength and top reputations of D'Angelo, Giotto and Messina in labor and employment matters; the growing national prominence of Harper's health care merger practice; Quain's national and international reputation for his work in energy and utility matters; and Schorling's influence and contributions to legislative efforts involving bankruptcy and creditors' rights.

The article highlighted each attorney individually, detailing each one's particular practice area, his past accomplishments and current role at Buchanan.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Shareholder Joins Philadelphia Bar Foundation's Board of Trustees
Litigation attorney Steven E. Bizar has been appointed to serve a three-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Philadelphia Bar Association.

Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney shares the Foundation's commitment to promote access to justice for all people in the community. Bizar's service on the board exemplifies Buchanan's substantial support of law-related programs that assist the underrepresented citizens in Philadelphia. Since 1964, the Foundation has awarded millions of dollars in grants to law-related programs in the Philadelphia area that assist the indigent, elderly and disabled, as well as abused women and children.

Gide Loyrette Nouel Budapest advised Dalkia Energia on the acquisition of Hungary's largest biomass power plant:
ide Loyrette Nouel advised Dalkia Energia, the Hungarian subsidiary of Dalkia, on the acquisition of a 99.94% interest in Pannon Power Holding, which operates a biomass plant and a combined heat and power plant in the city of Pécs.

Dalkia bought 85% of the shares from RPG, an investment company which belongs to the Crossroads Capital group, and another 14.9% from small investors.

The biomass plant which is capable of generating 50 MWe of electricity, will be Dalkia's largest wood-fired facility and one of the biggest in Central Europe.

A subsidiary of Veolia Environnement and Electricité de France (EDF), Dalkia is the leading European provider of energy services to local authorities and businesses.

The Gide Loyrette Nouel team in Budapest which advised Dalkia Energia on that deal was led by Jacques de Servigny, partner, assisted by Istvan Molnar, local partner, and Akos Kovach.

GSB's Kenneth L. Schubert, Jr. Elected to Board of Directors of Seattle Rotary #4
Garvey Schubert Barer is pleased to announce that Kenneth L. Schubert, Jr., an Owner in the firm's Seattle office, has been elected to the Board of Directors of Seattle Rotary #4. He will serve a two year term beginning July 1, 2007. He has been a member of Seattle Rotary #4 since 1989.

A founding member of the firm in 1966, Mr. Schubert has devoted a substantial portion of his practice to estate planning and trust and probate administration since 1970. He has extensive experience advising owners of family-held businesses on estate planning and administering large estates and trusts. He also serves as lead counsel in litigation involving complex trusts, estates, and estate tax disputes. Mr. Schubert has an active business practice as well, acting as outside general counsel to a number of large, closely-held family businesses.

Mr. Schubert earned his J.D. (1964, Order of the Coif) and his B.A. (1961, magna cum laude ) from the University of Washington.

Kyphon Inc. Convertible Senior Notes Offering
Davis Polk & Wardwell advised J.P. Morgan Securities Inc., Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Banc of America Securities LLC as joint book-running managers of a Rule 144A offering by Kyphon Inc. of $200 million aggregate principal amount of its 1.00% convertible senior notes due 2012 and $200 million aggregate principal amount of its 1.25% convertible senior notes due 2014. Davis Polk also advised JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association, Goldman, Sachs & Co. and Bank of America, N.A. as counterparties to call spread transactions in connection with the offering.

Kyphon Inc. is a global medical device company specializing in the design, manufacture and marketing of medical devices to treat and restore spinal anatomy and diagnose low back pain using minimally invasive technology.

The Davis Polk corporate team included partner Alan F. Denenberg, associates Michael Nordtvedt, Stephen Salmon and John Crawford and legal assistant Karla K. Rogers, all of the Menlo Park office.
