Blackburn Institute's 2007 Winter Symposium
Bradley Arant Rose & White LLP partner, James Childs, spoke at the Blackburn Institute's 2007 Winter Symposium on February 3, 2007, at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham. His topic was "Technology: Driving the Speed of Change in Alabama," which focused on the state's relative competitive advantages in the technology industry, as well as the challenges the state must face in order to sustain its momentum. The Blackburn Institute is a program of The University of Alabama designed to create a network of leaders - the Blackburn Fellows - who have a clear understanding of the challenges that face the State of Alabama. The winter event was attended by the current student fellows, alumni fellows, advisory board members and community leaders.

Weil Gotshal’s Miami and Texas Offices Receive 2007 Sager Award
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP is one of two law firms being honored by the Minority Corporate Council Association (MCCA) with the 2007 South/Southwest Region Thomas L. Sager Award. The MCCA presents the Sager Award to law firms that have demonstrated a sustained commitment to improving the hiring, retention and promotion of minority attorneys. Weil Gotshal’s Miami and Texas offices embody the essence of the award, as demonstrated by the various programs and initiatives that they have implemented, such as their mentoring program and a diversity focused recruiting strategy. In addition, most recently, all of the newly promoted Texas partners and counsel were women.

Weil Gotshal will be honored at a ceremony held on February 27, 2007 in Dallas, Texas.

Robinson & Cole Environmental and Land Use Analyst Participates in "No Child Left Inside" Event
R&C Environmental & Land Use Analyst John M. Anderson, recently participated in a day-long "No Child Left Inside" event at Black Rock State Park in Thomaston, CT. John, volunteering on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection's Master Wildlife Program, taught wildlife tracking to elementary school-aged children and their parents throughout the day.

Despite the freezing temperatures, attendance was high and the event planners were extremely satisfied with the success of the event. It is estimated that total attendance for the day exceeded 450 people, with participants coming from all around the state. The "No Child Left Inside" program is a project developed through a joint effort by Governor Rell and DEP Commissioner McCarthy to reconnect children with nature and help develop the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens. National Advocacy Center Dedicates Courtroom to Michael Shelby
the National Advocacy Center of the United States Department of Justice dedicated a courtroom in honor of former Fulbright partner and one-time U.S. Attorney, Michael Taylor Shelby.

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Gives Tribute to Shelby Family

In a ceremony attended by Shelby’s wife and daughters, the Honorable Michael Battle, Director of the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys, introduced some of Shelby’s closest peers: U.S. Attorneys Donald DeGabrielle, Johnny Sutton and Paul Warner.

The Honorable Alberto Gonzales, U.S. Attorney of the United States of America, presented the plaque commemorating Shelby’s life.

Fulbright Partner Named Volunteer of the Year
Fulbright partner Jerry Converse got a surprise this week at The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting when he was named Volunteer of the Year for Government Relations. Converse attended the meeting with Fulbright attorneys Brian Fenske, Pike Powers and Shafeeqa Giarratani. The firm hosted clients in the packed ballroom at the Hilton Austin hotel.

Converse actively supports the Chamber’s Opportunity Austin Initiative, a five-year economic growth plan that aims to bring business to the city. He sits on the Economic Development Council of Opportunity Austin and co-chairs a Chamber committee that helps recruit companies into Central Texas. He has also appeared before Texas legislative committees on behalf of the Chamber and currently serves as the Chamber’s representative on an advisory group to Austin City Councilmember Lee Leffingwell.

As head of the real estate practice in Fulbright’s Austin office, Converse has significant experience in advising and counseling American and foreign businesses and developers regarding their real estate and facilities legal matters and has represented business enterprises in negotiating and documenting governmental incentive agreements.

Converse is Board Certified in Commercial Real Estate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and also a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers; the College of the State Bar of Texas; a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and is listed in Best Lawyers in America.

Last year, The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce honored Fulbright partner Pike Powers with its Austinite of the Year award.

Fulbright Assists Affirmative Insurance Holdings in $220 Million Acquisition
Fulbright's insurance transaction group team, led by partner Bob Ansehl, assisted Affirmative Insurance Holdings, Inc. in its acquisition of the insurance holding company US Agencies Group. Key members of the team included senior counsel Rob deButts and senior associate Susan Lee.

In the all cash transaction valued at approximately $220 million, Affirmative Insurance Holdings acquired all of US Agencies Group’s subsidiary insurers and brokerage agencies. US Agencies is a non-standard automobile insurance provider headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It has 92 sales offices in Louisiana, Illinois and Alabama. In 2005, US Agencies had gross written premium of approximately $157 million.

Affirmative Insurance Holdings, headquartered in Chicago, Illinois and Addison, Texas, is a producer and insurer of personal non-standard automobile insurance. The company offers products and services in 12 states.

Fulbright Partner Patsy Nichols and Husband Chosen Aggie Fish Camp “Namesakes”
Fulbright’s Patsy Nichols and her husband, Bruce--both ardent Aggie supporters and parents of a former student--were chosen as Texas A&M Namesakes for Fish Camp 2007. Fish Camp is a student-run organization that welcomes and provides orientation for 4,500 incoming freshmen each year to Texas A&M.

The Nichols were chosen for the “positive influence and outreach they provide Texas A&M University.” They will have one of the 36 Fish Camps that counsels freshmen students named in their honor this year. The Nichols were chosen last year as Texas A&M University Parents of the Year 2006-2007. They have also endowed a leadership conference at Texas A&M for sophomores in the Corps of Cadets.
