UK Competition Practice Named Competition Team of the Year
Jones Day's UK competition practice was named "Competition Team of the Year" at the Legal Business Awards 2007 held in London. The award was given to Jones Day in recognition of its role as legal advisers to MasterCard in the successful appeal of the UK Office of Fair Trading's (OFT) 2005 Decision outlawing MasterCard's UK interchange fee arrangements. Jones Day shares the award with two other firms representing the UK banks operating within the MasterCard system.

Widely recognised as the most important UK competition law case in 2006, the setting aside by the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal of the OFT's high profile Decision brought to an end the longest and most complex investigation in the OFT's history. The OFT's Decision had jeopardised the viability of the MasterCard scheme in its largest market outside of the U.S. (accounting in 2004 for 700 million transactions with a value of £42 billion). Not only was Jones Day and its co-award winners successful in having the OFT's Decision rendered null and void, they also obtained the largest costs award against the OFT to date.

The Jones Day team was led by partner Greg Olsen in London and partners Bernard Amory and Vincent Brophy in Brussels.

Firm Saves Pro Bono Client From Eviction During Holiday Season
Jenner & Block recently helped an elderly retiree resolve a dispute with a landlord who had attempted to evict her during the Holiday Season in retaliation for her complaints to the City of Chicago.

The pro bono client was served with a notice of eviction on October 31, 2006. Jenner & Block was not retained until the day before her eviction hearing on December 1, 2006. Upon taking her case, Jenner & Block learned that the landlord had filed the eviction action because the client had complained to city officials about the living conditions in her building. City Inspectors had verified her complaints and found 30 separate municipal code violations at the premises, including the presence of mice, rats, and other vermin inside her unit. The client alleged that she only enjoyed intermittent heat service. As suggested by Jenner & Block, the client continued calling the City of Chicago until City Inspectors confirmed that the ambient temperature in her unit was only 55 degrees – a temperature substantially below the minimum established by the City of Chicago Winter Heat Ordinance.

The Firm demanded that the landlord withdraw his eviction claim and proposed that the client should be provided sufficient time after the Holiday season to find a suitable residence as a replacement in addition to other compensatory terms.

As a result of the Firm’s legal actions, the landlord’s counsel agreed to the settlement proposed by the Firm and the client found a suitable replacement apartment after the holiday season.

The Firm’s team on this matter was led by Associate Shorge K. Sato who was supervised by Partners Richard T. Franch and Patricia A. Bronte.

Jenner & Block became involved in the case through the Pro Bono Center for Disability and Elder Law.

Jenner & Block Sponsors "Cool Globes" Global Warming Awareness Art Exhibit
Jenner & Block is a sponsor of the groundbreaking “Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet” art exhibit to be held along Chicago's lake front during the Summer of 2007. The initiative, created through a partnership between the Field Museum and the City of Chicago, will display 100 large globes designed by local and international artists, each depicting an environmentally important message and potential solution for global warming.

The giant globes, each measuring five feet in diameter, will suggest to viewers a variety of ways to combat global warming. In addition to the art exhibit, the initiative will also feature a lecture series by prominent scientists, business and civic leaders, and celebrities. The Cool Globes project, which is funded in part by Jenner & Block’s sponsorship, will also include a business leaders roundtable for executives to share best practices for company-wide environmental initiatives.

“We’re proud to support this important civic awareness project because it is consistent with the Firm's long-standing commitment to public service and pro bono representation,” said Partner Christopher D. Liguori, who together with Partner Anton R. Valukas is spearheading the Firm’s sponsorship.

“Global climate change affects all of us and it’s important we each do our part to help improve the environment,” agreed Mr. Valukas, who is a member of Jenner & Block's Policy Committee. “This sponsorship, we feel, is also consistent with the related work and counseling being done by the Firm’s Environmental, Energy and Natural Resources Law Practice on behalf of its corporate clients.”

At the conclusion of the exhibit, the globes will be auctioned to the public. Proceeds from the auction will fund environmental education initiatives in local public schools.
