The American Red Cross Honors Wiley Rein with Circle of Humanitarians Award
The American Red Cross has presented to Wiley Rein LLP its prestigious Circle of Humanitarians Award in recognition of the firm’s assistance in obtaining the phone number 1-800-RED-CROSS. In presenting the award, which is given “in appreciation of generous annual giving and support” of The American Red Cross’s humanitarian efforts, the Red Cross noted that securing the number is an accomplishment providing lasting and long term benefits.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Wiley Rein attorneys R. Michael Senkowski, Suzanne Yelen and Greg Vogt worked with the organization and the Federal Communications Commission to secure the phone number for the Red Cross to use for its relief efforts. The Red Cross tribute was presented at a luncheon in their honor.

Charmaine Cheung Joins Townsend and Townsend and Crew's Growing Denver Litigation Practice
Charmaine Cheung joined the Denver office of Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP, a 180-attorney law firm specializing in intellectual property, antitrust and complex litigation, as an associate in the firm’s litigation group.

Ms. Cheung’s practice focuses on patent litigation, licensing and prosecution. A native of Ontario, Canada, she earned her undergraduate degree in engineering at McGill University in Montreal, and received her law degree from George Washington University.

Prior to joining Townsend, Ms. Cheung worked as an engineer for a large construction company and the Canadian National Railway, and designed highway bridges in Hong Kong. She began her legal career with a Washington, D.C. law firm where she was active with several nonprofit organizations including serving the Washington, D.C. Theater Alliance and “Doing Small Miracles for Others.”

“We are pleased to welcome Charmaine to our team,” said Darin Gibby, managing partner in Townsend’s Denver office. “Her experience as well as her commitment to her profession and her community will make her an outstanding asset to our clients.”

Salans advises Pfizer in the sale of its consumer health care products division to Johnson & Johnson
Salans has advised the American group Pfizer, world leader in the pharmaceutical industry, in the sale of its complete worldwide division of consumer health care products (PCH) to the American group Johnson & Johnson. The deal, for a global amount of 16.6 billion USD, was closed for the French part on 26 January 2007.

PCH is the division of Pfizer, active in the field of pharmaceutical and body hygiene products, including leading products such as Listérine, Nicorette, Actifed, Alostil, Hextril, Actisoins and Lansoyl.

The transaction was authorised by the European Commission 11 December 2006 and the American Federal Trade Commission on 12 December.

For France the deal related to the sale of a production plant located in Orléans and the sale of Pfizer group's subsidiaries and relating commercialisation activities, pursuant to which approximately 700 employees were transferred to the Johnson & Johnson group.

By separating itself from the market of consumer health care products, Pfizer can refocus on its main activity, prescription pharmaceuticals, for which it is the number one worldwide.

Perkins Coie Closes Purchase of Holiday Inn City Centre in Chicago
A team of Perkins Coie attorneys recently closed the sale of the 495-room Holiday Inn City Centre, which was purchased by CCC Hotel Partners LLC, a joint venture between Oxford Lodging Advisory & Investment Group LLC and Dubai Investment Group.

The new owners have renamed the hotel the Chicago City Centre Hotel & Sports Club and will be launching a property-wide design change, including the redesign of guest rooms, public spaces, 17,000 square feet of convention and meeting space, and the addition of a restaurant. The redesign and rebranding of the hotel is intended to strengthen its historic appeal with both leisure and business travelers.

The acquisition is the third in Chicago in less than a year for Oxford Lodging. In 2006, the company led investment groups in the acquisition of the 443-room Allerton Crowne Plaza Chicago and the 357-room Best Western Inn of Chicago. Kokua Hospitality, an affiliate of Oxford Lodging, will manage all three properties, which are located in the heart of the city's Magnificent Mile shopping, dining and cultural district.

Gallagher Op-Ed on Disaster Communication Capabilities
Washington, D.C. partner Michael Gallagher co-authored an op-ed piece for C-NET's news.com, a news and information Web site focusing on communications and technology. The op-ed, titled "If catastrophe strikes tomorrow, are we ready?" raises concerns about communications capabilities of first responders in the wake of a disaster. The article was published on the eve of the Senate hearing on proposed legislation to fund grants for promising interoperable communications technologies.

Gallagher and his co-author Larry Irving are former Assistant Secretaries of Commerce for Communications and Information. They also authored the white paper "21st Century Communications Systems for First Responders: The Right Call.
