Weil Gotshal Involved in Landmark Case Concerning Same-Sex Partnerships
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, on behalf of the New York City Bar Association's Vance Center for International Justice Initiatives, provided pro bono counsel in an important case that could impact same-sex partnership rights across the globe. The firm drafted an amicus brief for submission to the Constitutional Court of Colombia that demonstrated that since 1996, courts and human rights bodies throughout the world have struck down measures that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in the provision of economic benefits.

This week, the Constitutional Court ruled that same-sex couples are entitled to register their domestic partnerships and receive certain economic benefits on equal terms with opposite-sex couples. The decision overturned a 1990 law establishing domestic partnership benefits but limiting such benefits to opposite-sex couples by defining a "partnership" as existing only between a man and a woman.

The Weil Gotshal team working on this matter consisted of Carrie Davenport and Caryn Lederer.

Fulbright Serves as Bond Counsel for Nebraska Power Upgrade
Fulbright is bond counsel on an upcoming issue of $94 million in taxable auction-rate revenue bonds from Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). The bonds will be used to fund upgrades to the Cooper Nuclear Station. James Marlin, partner in the Fulbright New York office, is handling the transaction.

The deal reflects a trend among municipal power agencies in the Midwest that are issuing bonds to improve their outdated infrastructure and to meet growing demand for electricity. NPPD plans to issue the bonds on February 20, 2007.

The Fulbright public finance practice was ranked among the nation’s top bond counsel, underwriter counsel and disclosure counsel in Thomson Financial’s recently released rankings for 2006. Fulbright regularly handles more than $15 billion a year in infrastructure financing.

Fitch Ratings assigned its A-plus rating to the upcoming NPPD sale and affirmed the A-plus rating on $1.4 billion of outstanding general revenue bonds. Moody's and Standard & Poor's affirmed their ratings on the NPPD debt at A1 and A, respectively.
