Lindquist & Vennum Honored as One of the Best Places to Work in Minnesota
Lindquist & Vennum has once again been ranked among the Best Places to Work in Minnesota by the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal. A three-time honoree, our firm ranked 14th in the medium-sized company category.

"It's a high priority for us to provide an environment that encourages teamwork and mutual respect," said the firm's managing partner Daryle Uphoff. "We value everyone who works here and the contributions they make to the firm."

Best Places to Work are chosen based on an electronic employee survey. Employees are asked to rate their companies on these topics: work environment, embracing innovations/new ideas, people practices, personal growth and development, people in the organization and how things work day-to-day.

Information about the firm culture and efforts to create a positive work environment are featured in the August 17 issue of The Business Journal.

4th Annual Ladies' Day at the Track
At the 4th Annual Ladies’ Day at the Track on August 2, 2007, nearly 100 women from around the community shared a day of fun which included numerous wins, a few losses and the opportunity to spend time with friends, new and old.

A great menu and the wonderful Ellis Park staff helped the ladies stay cool, although the heat was not enough to stop the group from joining jockey Thomas Pompell, who rode Mo’s Prize to victory, for a blanket race photo in the Winner's Circle.

This year, the women of KDDK also took advantage of the opportunity to express our gratitude for all we have by supporting Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Again Playground. Donations were accepted at the event and the firm has agreed to match the amount that was raised. Many thanks to all who contributed to this wonderful cause.

The women of Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP thank all our guests for taking the time to join us for the day. We look forward to an especially exciting day next year when Ladies' Day at the Track celebrates its fifth year and KDDK celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Joe Simons Quoted in Associated Press Article
Litigation partner Joe Simons was quoted in an August 29 Associated Press article regarding the upcoming purchase of Wild Oats Markets by Whole Foods Market Inc. The merger will now go through after months of delay due to an attempted block by the Federal Trade Commission. Joe commented on FTC policies and said that "they have to pay more attention to the economic evidence... Whole Foods' victory will make other companies fight more aggressively when regulators try to block acquisitions."

Locke Reynolds Receives Defense Verdict for Ford
After deliberating for one hour, a state court jury in Jackson, Mississippi returned a unanimous defense verdict in a case alleging insufficient roof strength in a 1986 Ford Crown Victoria. Locke Reynolds attorneys, Kevin Schiferl and Todd Croftchik represented Ford as lead trial counsel, with the assistance of counsel from Baker Donelson (Jackson, Mississippi) and Cabaniss Smith Toole and Wiggins (Maitland, Florida).

On December 22, 1998, William Bynum was the belted driver of his 1986 Crown Victoria, traveling on a paved, two-lane rural road. For unknown reasons, Mr. Bynum lost control of the vehicle when entering a corner. It left the roadway at approximately 40 mph, entered into a passenger side leading yaw and traveled 300 feet before it rolled over one half times coming to rest on its roof at the bottom of a roadside ditch. As a result of the crash, Mr. Bynum was rendered a quadriplegic.

Plaintiff contended the roof of the Crown Victoria was defective and allowed excessive intrusion due to various gage reductions, material changes and the placement/design of holes in the C-pillar and rear header. Plaintiff also alleged Ford was negligent because it did not test the rear header to see how it would perform.

Ford defended the case with evidence that the roof structure performed well over the occupant's seating position. The roof met the government's standard, FMVSS 216, and was a robust and reasonably safe design. Ford also presented evidence that Mr. Bynum had a stiffer than normal spine, "bamboo spine," and that his injury was caused by his body diving into the roof as opposed to any roof deformation.
