Owen Nee, Leading China Lawyer, Joins Jones Day
Owen D. Nee, Jr., a leading China practice lawyer, has joined the international law firm Jones Day, based in its New York Office.

"This is a very important development for Jones Day's China practice" said Stephen J. Brogan, Managing Partner of Jones Day. "Owen Nee is one of the most experienced and well-respected lawyers in the China practice and he will add a significant dimension to the firm's already substantial achievements in China."

Jones Day's presence in China is one of the largest of any international law firm, with more than 125 lawyers based in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei. "Much of our practice involves investment by U.S. and European companies in China and there is an increasing amount of investment by Chinese companies in the United States. Therefore, we think it is important to have a substantial China practice base in our New York Office" said Mr. Brogan. "Owen will be the anchor of that practice in New York, advising clients on China matters and providing guidance to the Chinese lawyers who are admitted to the New York Bar and based in the New York office."

Mr. Nee was the founder of the China practice at Coudert Brothers, which was the first foreign law firm to establish offices in both Beijing and Hong Kong. Many of the transactions documented by Mr. Nee were the first of their kind in China, including the documentation of the first equity joint venture, the first large scale project financing, the first American offshore oil concession, and the first syndicated loan to China. For more than 25 years, Mr. Nee was based in Greater China, principally in Hong Kong but also in Beijing and Shanghai. He returned to the United States in 2005.

Mr. Nee has represented many of the world's largest corporations in a wide variety of China transactions and he has advised Chinese clients on numerous matters, including the first IPO of a Chinese company on the New York Stock Exchange, the first currency swap for a Chinese bank and the first internal investigation of corporate governance procedures for a Chinese bank.

Mr. Nee was named in the 2006 Asialaw Leading Lawyers survey as "one of the most highly acclaimed legal experts in the Asia-Pacific region." He has also been named as one of New York's Super Lawyers in the most recent publication of the list. Mr. Nee is admitted to practice in New York, England and Wales, and Hong Kong; and he will divide his time between the Jones Day offices in New York and in Shanghai.

Mr. Nee edits the Bureau of National Affair's Tax Portfolio on Business Operations in China, is the general editor of Commerce Clearing House's Guide to PRC Tax and Customs Law, and is the author of Shareholder Agreements and Joint Ventures in the People's Republic of China (Thomson Hong Kong, 2005). Mr. Nee is currently writing a book for West Publications on China's Contract Law. He has taught at New York University Law School and is currently an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School teaching a course on International Business and Investment Transactions with China.

Hogan & Hartson Adds Automotive Industry Practice Group to Its New York and Los Angeles Offices
Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today the addition of four prominent attorneys to the firm’s transportation and litigation practices. Carl J. Chiappa, John J. Sullivan, and Jason P. Isralowitz will join the firm’s New York office as partners. Colm A. Moran will join the firm’s Los Angeles office as a partner.

The group represents approximately two dozen automobile, motorcycle, and recreational vehicle manufacturers and distributors and their financial services affiliates in regulatory counseling and litigation. They were previously partners at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP.

“We are pleased to welcome this talented group of transportation and litigation partners,” said J. Warren Gorrell, Jr., Chairman of the firm. “Not only are Carl and his team a great addition to our growing New York and Los Angeles offices, but the depth of their transportation and litigation experience will be an asset across the firm.”

Chiappa has practiced in motor vehicle franchise law for more than 25 years. He and his group counsel franchisors on a wide range of matters and litigate disputes across the country relating to franchise terminations, ownership transfers, new dealership appointments, warranty reimbursement, franchise modification, fraud, price discrimination and allocation issues, and brand withdrawal. The team also advises clients on the creation of new dealer networks, as well as on nationwide dealership upgrade initiatives.

“The scope and depth of Hogan & Hartson’s practice, and its strong ties to the automobile industry, are a great fit for our practice,” said Chiappa. “We believe our experience will enhance the firm’s existing client relationships and are certain that joining Hogan & Hartson will significantly augment our ability to service our clients.”

Chiappa received his law degree from the New York University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Fordham University.

Sullivan has litigated franchise disputes for motor vehicle manufacturers and distributors for the last six years. His litigation experience also encompasses class actions, intellectual property, employment law, commodities, directors’ and officers’ liability, securities, and unfair competition. He received his law degree from the New York University School of Law, where he was managing editor of the Law Review, and his undergraduate degree from Cornell University.

Isralowitz has been an integral part of the practice group since his graduation from law school in 1993. In addition to counseling manufacturers on regulatory issues and litigating franchise disputes, he supervises a comprehensive database of statutory and decisional law pertaining to the motor vehicle industry. He received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was an associate editor of the Law Review, and his undergraduate degree from Boston University.

Moran began focusing his practice on motor vehicle franchise law approximately three years ago.
