Daniel B. Pasternak Appointed to National Multiple Sclerosis Society Board of Directors
The international law firm Greenberg Traurig is pleased to announce that Daniel B. Pasternak has been appointed to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Arizona Chapter. The Board recently increased the number of Directors from 10 to 18 in an effort to broaden the scope of services and expand program delivery. Pasternak is the only attorney currently appointed to the Board.

“I am honored to be a part of an organization that does so much for so many,” states Pasternak, an attorney in Greenberg Traurig’s Labor and Employment practice. “My objective as a Director is to use my legal background to assist the organization with governance and corporate development.”

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's mission is to end the devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic neurological disease that affects the central nervous system. Founded in 1956, the Arizona Chapter currently serves more than 6,000 people with MS and their families throughout the state. A not-for-profit agency, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society provides information, education, counseling, referral sources, social activities and more. The Arizona Chapter’s major fundraising campaigns include the MS Walks, the MS Bike Tour and the Dinner of Champions.

Pasternak focuses his practice on litigating and defending employment claims, as well as representing management in traditional labor relations matters. He earned a B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law. Pasternak is admitted to practice in Arizona, Illinois, the Supreme Court of the United States, and the U.S. Court of Appeals’ Third, Seventh, and Ninth Circuits. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section and currently resides in Phoenix.

Greenberg Traurig Shareholder Heather Meeker Receives Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights James T. Caleshu Award
Heather Meeker, a shareholder in the Silicon Valley office of the international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP, is honored with the James T. Caleshu Award from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the Bay Area for her leadership, commitment and outstanding pro bono contributions to the organization’s Legal Services for Entrepreneurs Program (LSE).

"We applaud Heather for this much-deserved award," said Todd Rumberger, managing shareholder of the Silicon Valley office. "She has been instrumental in the success of the LSE program, and her contributions of time, energy and knowledge have served as an example within our firm and the law community at large."

The James T. Caleshu Award, presented Feb. 12 at the Lawyers’ Committee’s 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon in San Francisco, honors those who have made extraordinary pro bono contributions to the Committee, an organization devoted to advancing the rights of people of color, poor people, immigrants and refugees. Meeker was particularly involved in the LSE program, which provides free legal services in the areas of incorporation/entity formation, tax counseling, trade name protection, equity capital formation, lease negotiation, employment counseling and franchising.
Meeker served as LSE Advisory Board Co-Chair (2002-2004) and has been a member of the organization’s Screening Committee since 2001. She regularly leads workshops on intellectual property issues for LSE’s small business clients, often speaking in Spanish. In addition, Meeker has directly represented several LSE clients.

Meeker focuses her practice on intellectual property transactions for technology clients in a variety of industries, including software, communications, educational testing, computer equipment and medical devices. She is experienced in the field of open source licensing and in intellectual property matters related to mergers and acquisitions.

Meeker received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law (1994), where she was elected to Order of the Coif. She earned her B.A., magma cum laude, in economics from Yale University (1979).

Pennington Partners to Speak at Florida Bar CLE seminar on Practicing Before the Legislature
Pennington Partners Peter M. Dunbar, Marc W. Dunbar, and Samuel P. Bell were recent featured speakers at a Florida Bar Continuing Legal Education seminar for lawyers and non-lawyers wanting to learn about the Legislative process. Topics included an overview of the legislative process, how bills become law, regulation of lobbyists and prohibitions on lobbying expenditures, simulated committee meetings, duties of the Senate, House and Clerk’s offices, and debates by legislative staff and former members of the legislature.

William H. Hollimon joins Pennington Firm
Pennington law firm is pleased to announce that William H. Hollimon has joined the firm. Mr. Hollimon is practicing Intellectual Property law, Administrative & Public Utilities Law and Civil Litigation out of the firm's Tallahassee Florida office.

Mr. Hollimon received a Juris Doctorate with Honors from The Florida State University. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida, where he received his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Hollimon also holds a Masters in Business Administration from The Florida State University.

Mr. Hollimon has extensive experience in the areas of intellectual property, power plant siting, electricity sales contracts, and fiber optic class action litigation. Mr. Hollimon is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida, and the United States Court of Federal Claims. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Hollimon practiced as an engineer in the electric utility industry.

Mr. Hollimon has also served as an adjunct professor at The Florida State University College of Law teaching copyright and trade secret law.

Lathrop & Gage's Jeff Ellis Selected to Co-Chair Governor's Health Information Exchange Commission
Jeff Ellis, a member at Lathrop & Gage L.C., has been selected to serve as co-chair of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius’ Health Information Exchange (HIE) Commission, a group created to bring providers and stakeholders together to advance the use of information technology in health care.


The HIE Commission will coordinate and focus the state’s continuing efforts to capitalize on the advantages of technology to achieve health care cost effectiveness and quality. It will work to implement the recommendations of existing statewide workgroups within the Governor’s Health Care Cost Containment Commission. The new HIE Commission will focus its efforts on standardizing physician credentialing procedures, developing a health care ID card and promoting the electronic exchange of health information privately and securely.


“This commission will consider real-life solutions that will save administrative costs, reduce billing errors, enhance the quality of care, and, at the same time, assist patients as they navigate the health care system,” Ellis said. “It is exciting for Kansas to be on the cutting edge of technology, and even more exciting for me to be a part of developing efforts to make technology work for both the patients and Kansas health care providers.”


Ellis has 30 years of experience in health care law and is currently the partner in charge of Lathrop & Gage’s Overland Park office. He represents health care providers in a wide variety of matters, including general corporate law, restructuring of health care systems, government regulatory compliance, mergers of health care entities, hospital medical staff matters and more. Throughout his career, Ellis has participated in state and local government activities dealing with health care planning, policy development, insurance regulation and public health and welfare issues. He has been named to The Best Lawyers in America and Missouri/Kansas Super Lawyers.

His co-chair, Karen Braman, currently works with the Kansas Health Policy Authority and on February 26 will join Preferred Health Systems. Other members of the HIE Commission include representatives of the provider community, consumers, business community, health plans, government, and information technology and health policy experts.

They are charged with taking a public/private approach to advancing the use of information technology and ensuring patients’ private health information is protected and secure.

Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis LLP (K&L Gates) welcomes Timothy L. Pierce as a partner in the firm’s construction litigation practice. Pierce comes to K&L Gates from Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP.

Pierce focuses his practice on all legal aspects of the construction industry including contract formation, the prosecution and defense of construction contract claims—including ADA Title III public access claims—on behalf of owners, contractors and subcontractors for both private and public projects. Pierce also advises clients on insurance law issues, with special emphasis on coverage for underlying construction, intellectual property and environmental claims.

Hiscock & Barclay, LLP Adds Seven Lawyers To IP Group and Announces New Boston Office
Hiscock & Barclay, LLP announced today the addition of six new patent attorneys, one patent litigator, and a new office in the Boston Metro area, establishing a regional Intellectual Property & Technology group of 27 attorneys and non-attorney professionals, comprised of patent attorneys, agents, docketing specialists, and paralegals - bringing the firm to 180 attorneys. The new lateral group brings nationally-recognized expertise in a broad array of Intellectual Property specialties.

Formerly of Marjama & Bilinski, LLP (previously known as Wall Marjama & Bilinski LLP), the seven-attorney group possess technical backgrounds across the disciplines of electrical and mechanical engineering, computer sciences, optics, physics, biology, organic/inorganic and physical chemistry, and have expertise in obtaining intellectual property rights in all fields such as copyrights, trademarks and patents. They enhance the firm’s expertise in preparing and prosecuting patent applications, issuing relevant legal opinions, handling patent licensing matters involving infringement, clearing trademarks for use, U.S. and foreign trademark prosecution, and acquisition and transfer of trademark rights. Thomas J. Wall, former founding member of Wall, Marjama & Bilinski, LLP, has been in private practice since 1975. He is a patent attorney with experience in preparing and prosecuting patent applications in a variety of technology areas, along with legal opinions and patent licensing matters involving infringement. He also has considerable experience clearing trademarks for use, U.S. and foreign trademark prosecution, and acquisition and transfer of trademark rights. Prior to private practice, he was a senior attorney with Xerox Corporation and patent counsel with Carrier Corporation. He is a graduate of University of Wisconsin (LL.B., 1965).

Joseph B. Milstein, Ph.D. focuses his practice on the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, both nationally and internationally. He counsels clients in patent prosecution strategy, assessing intellectual property for business transactions and/or litigation, and technology licensing. He has also provided advice on the treatment of patent royalties under Internal Revenue Code section 1235. Prior to joining Hiscock & Barclay, Milstein was a Partner with Wall Marjama & Bilinski, LLP in Boston. Milstein brings with him an impressive following of clients including a number of higher-education clients. Before private practice, Milstein was an Associate Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. He is a graduate of New England School of Law (J.D., 1999, cum laude), University of Maryland, College Park (M.B.A., Finance, 1981), and Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (Ph.D., Inorganic Chemistry, 1971), and the California Institute of Technology (B.S. Chemistry, 1966).

Robert E. Purcell is a highly accomplished intellectual property attorney and the former Managing Partner of Wall Marjama & Bilinski, LLP. With more than 30 years of practicing intellectual property law, he has extensively handled the procurement, maintenance, licensing, and enforcement of patents, trademarks, and copyrights in the United States and worldwide. A substantial portion of Purcell’s legal work has been servicing clients as lead or co-lead counsel in over 100 lawsuits, including trials, appeals, and arbitration proceedings. He is a graduate of Washington College of Law, American University (J.D., 1978).

R. Stephen Rosenholm’s practice includes preparation and prosecution of patent, trademark, and copyright applications in the U.S. and abroad. He also handles authoring of clearance to operate, patentability, non-infringement and validity opinions, client counseling regarding patent prosecution, licensing and litigation strategy, and the assessment of intellectual property for the purpose of litigation, licensing, and transactional business. Before joining the firm, Rosenholm was an Associate with Wall Marjama & Bilinski, LLP in Boston. Prior to private practice, he worked as a software developer for Bell Telephone Laboratories and served as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office while attending law school. He is a graduate of George Washington University Law School (J.D., 1999) and Georgia Institute of Technology (M.S., Industrial Engineering, 1980).

Joseph M. Geller focuses on prosecuting patent applications, counseling clients on patent prosecution strategy, infringement and validity studies, and the assessment of intellectual property. Prior to joining Hiscock & Barclay, Geller was Of Counsel with Wall, Marjama & Bilinski, LLP and a Patent Attorney at Lowenstein Sandler, PC in Roseland, NJ. Geller was also an electrical engineer at Brookhaven National Laboratory. In addition to his professional affiliations in the legal sector, Geller is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Optical Society of America (OSA). He is a graduate of Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center (J.D., 2001).

Duan Wu’s practice involves the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications, and provision of legal opinions and strategic advice. Prior to joining Hiscock & Barclay, Wu was Of Counsel with Wall Marjama & Bilinski, LLP in Boston and a Patent Attorney with Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP, also in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center (J.D., 1999), receiving his undergraduate degree in Biology from Harvard University (B.A., 1996, magna cum laude).

Michael D. Pinnisi focuses on patent and trade secret litigation, commercial litigation, and other commercial law and contract work. His work for a prominent high-technology company as General Counsel and Vice President of Business Development, included the design and management of a portfolio of over 100 patents, oversight of extensive intellectual property litigation, and the supervision of all licensing and a complex merger and spinout transaction. Pinnisi’s legal experience also includes his tenure with the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York as well as litigation work for major international law firms. Before joining the firm, Pinnisi was Of Counsel with Wall Marjama & Bilinski, LLP.
