Rob Bertsche quoted in Fairfield Citizen Document
Rob was quoted on the proposed Senate Bill that would restrict the delivery of free periodicals only to commercial or residential addresses whose residents have authorized the deliveries. Rob was quoted as saying:

"The proposed bill is unconstitutional, because it would unnecessarily restrain an entire category of speech without a sufficient governmental interest. It is not the role of the government to choke the flow of information to the public. A similar bill was ruled unconstitutional in Georgia less than 10 years ago, and we have no doubt the same result would occur if this misguided legislation became law. The First Amendment protects not only a newspaper's ability to express news and information; it also protects the newspaper's ability to spread that message. As the U.S. Supreme Court ruled almost 130 years ago, 'Liberty of circulation is as essential as liberty of publishing; indeed, without the circulation, the publication would be of little value.

Howrey Brussels Wins Belgian Legal Award as "US Law Firm of the Year" in Brussels
Howrey Brussels was named Top US Law Firm in Brussels last night at the Belgian Legal Awards ceremony. The award is given to the “US Law Firm in Brussels: having the bulk of their lawyers based in the United States. The winner will have shown significant progress in building a presence in Brussels. The jury will look both at the ability to develop a European hub and a presence on the local market. Judges will look at key transactions during the year, success in recruitment both in terms of recent additions and integration of foreign lawyers in the US firm.” according to the Award criteria.

“This is a magnificent achievement for our team,” said Trevor Soames, who as the Managing Partner from the inception of the office, has built the practice. “I am so proud of each and every member of our group, lawyers, professionals and other staff. Their hard work and dedication to excellence has resulted in this magnificent award.”

Howrey opened a Brussels office in September 2002 with 15 competition lawyers, including Soames, one of Brussels leading antitrust lawyers, and Julian Joshua, the former DG COMP Director credited with the creation of the EC’s modern cartel enforcement program. In 2005, the firm added an Intellectual property Practice headed by Carl De Meyer, one of Europe’s outstanding IP lawyers.

2006 was a year of tremendous growth. According to the firm’s Belgian Legal Awards submission, it accomplished the following:

• Marked its leading position in Brussels in the antitrust sector with the addition of former DG COMP Deputy Director General Goetz Drauz as partner.

• Added Marc Reysen and Michael Schütte from Freshfields Brussels as leading competition partners. Michael Schütte, who had been managing partner of Freshfields until joining Howrey, became joint office managing partner of Howrey Brussels on January 1, 2007.

• Brought in Haarman Hemmelrath’s head of competition Martina Maier as partner

• Boosted the IP practice by recruiting leading IP, life sciences and media partners Benoît Strowel, Maarten Meulenbelt, and Of Counsel Fabienne Brison

• Expanded its German and Spanish antitrust capabilities offered in the Brussels office

• Built the capability to have clients served in the fields of antitrust and IP by lawyers with Belgian, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish and US bar qualifications from its Brussels office

• Implemented a self-sustained antitrust/competition and IP practice in the Brussels office without relying on referrals.

Robert F. Ruyak, Chairman and CEO of Howrey added, “2007 has started strong for Howrey. In ten short weeks, we have again been named the world’s top Antitrust Practice by Global Competition Review, have been named the Top IP practice by Corporate Counsel/Fortune magazine’s annual survey and have received the Belgian Legal Award as Top US Firm in Brussels. As we prepare to announce a record breaking financial performance for last year, we are looking forward to an equally successful 2007. Congratulations to the Brussels office on this excellent achievement.
