Six Chapman and Cutler Attorneys in Salt Lake City Named to Utah "Legal Elite"
Reinforcing the eminence of Chapman and Cutler LLP among Utah’s legal community, six attorneys from the firm’s Salt Lake City office were selected by their peers to be part of the 2007 Utah Legal Elite, published by Utah Business magazine.

This is the fourth year that Utah Business canvassed members of the Utah Bar Association to recommend the state’s top lawyers. For the latest edition, 5,000 ballots were sent to Bar members, with various points assigned to chosen attorneys. The list was also vetted by a blue-ribbon panel of judges.

The six Chapman attorneys named among the Legal Elite represent a cross-section of practice disciplines, including public finance, commercial litigation, insurance and real estate, bankruptcy and corporate reorganization, environmental, health and safety, general corporate and securities work, and trusts and estates.

“It’s always gratifying to be recognized by your peers for the quality of your work and we appreciate that lawyers from across the state have taken notice of our accomplishments,” said Richard Scott, partner-in-charge of Chapman and Cutler’s Salt Lake City office and himself one of the six honorees.

Historically known for its public finance work in Utah going back to 1920, Chapman has recently expanded its practice base in the state, reflected by the range of attorneys chosen for this year’s Legal Elite.

“We have a broad-based practice in our Utah office and it’s satisfying to know that more than a third of our lawyers were selected for inclusion in this listing of the state’s premier legal talent,” Mr. Scott added.

The Chapman and Cutler attorneys included in this year’s Legal Elite are:

Richard Scott: A veteran of public finance with more than 30 years experience, Mr. Scott has represented all types of governmental issues as bond counsel, underwriter’s counsel and disclosure counsel. He has extensive experience in revenue bond and general obligation bond financings in the west. Chapman and Cutler was just named the most active bond counsel in the U.S. by Thomson Financial, the 26th year in a row that Chapman led all U.S. law firms in the volume of tax-exempt advisory assignments.

Kevin Murray: Mr. Murray practices environmental and land development law. He has played leading roles in the acquisition of environmentally sensitive property and brownfields development and has substantial experience with hard rock mining operations, interstate pipelines, refineries and general CERCLA/RCA remediation.

David Connors: Head of Chapman’s Salt Lake litigation group, Mr. Connor focuses on commercial litigation, insurance regulatory proceedings, class action defense and bankruptcy-related litigation. He has nationwide experience before state and federal trial courts and appellate courts.

James Tracy: Mr. Tracy’s practice involves a wide-range of litigation matters. He has successfully tried, arbitrated, and mediated cases in state and federal courts for more than a dozen years.

Stephen M. Tumblin: As head of Chapman’s corporate practice in Salt Lake City, Mr. Tumblin has advised numerous companies on transactional matters, debt and equity financing, business restructuring and workouts.

Adelaide Maudsley: The only associate included in the Legal Elite, Ms. Maudsley is part of Chapman’s special litigation, bankruptcy and workouts department. She has represented debtors, committees, trustees, secured creditors, insurers and preference defendants in Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases and workouts.

Chapman and Cutler began advising on municipal finance projects in the Utah in 1920 and opened its first office in Salt Lake City in 1981. Chapman notably expanded its presence in the state in 2006 with the addition of a six-attorney group led by Mr. Murray. The firm’s Salt Lake City office has clients that include national corporations as well as prominent Utah-based businesses. “We congratulate our Utah colleagues for their selection to this year’s Legal Elite – in our view, the listing is Utah’s equivalent of the annual Chambers rankings, which mark the pinnacle of peer recognition,” said Richard Cosgrove, Chief Executive Partner at Chapman and Cutler in Chicago.

“The inclusion of such a solid lineup from our Salt Lake office is also proof positive that our expansion there less than a year ago has strengthened our position as a top law firm in the western region.

Bryan Cave Strategies Expands Counseling Abilities with Key Additions
The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP has made two major additions to the firm’s bipartisan public policy and government affairs subsidiary. Broderick Johnson has joined as president of Bryan Cave Strategies LLC and of counsel to Bryan Cave LLP. Jennifer Stewart has joined as senior vice president of Bryan Cave Strategies. In their new capacities, Johnson and Stewart will oversee a broad range of strategic consulting relationships for the firm.

“We are committed to providing clients with a bipartisan team tailored to serve their unique needs,” said Don Lents, chairman of Bryan Cave. “Broderick’s and Jennifer’s distinguished careers in politics and public affairs will be a tremendous asset to our clients and to the strategic growth of our government affairs subsidiary.”

Johnson comes to Bryan Cave with more than two decades of public policy and law experience. From 1998-2000, Johnson served in the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. Most significantly, he was named deputy assistant to the president and House liaison, acting as the Clinton administration’s primary advocate before the U.S. House of Representatives during 1999 and 2000. From May through November 2004, he served as the senior congressional affairs adviser for the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign. As a private sector lobbyist from 2000-2007, he has been a vice president for congressional affairs with the AT&T and BellSouth corporations. During those years, he has worked extensively with the Democratic leadership of both Houses of Congress. His primary policy focus has been before House and Senate committees presiding over commerce, judiciary and tax issues.

Johnson began his legal career in 1983 when he was appointed assistant counsel in the House of Representatives’ Office of Legislative Counsel. He left that post in 1989 to join the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley, Rein & Fielding. After spending four years with that firm, he returned to Congress to serve as majority staff director and chief counsel for the House Committee on the District of Columbia (1993-1995) and went on to serve as the Democratic chief counsel for the House Committee on Education and the Workforce under ranking member William Clay (D–MO) from 1995-1998. Johnson has been a member of the District of Columbia Bar since 1984.

Johnson serves on the boards of directors of several philanthropic and academic entities, including the Center for American Progress and the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. He received a B.A. in philosophy from the College of the Holy Cross in 1978 and received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1983.

Stewart most recently served as a senior manager for AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals (AZ). In this capacity, she strengthened AZ’s relationships with members of Congress and a range of advocacy groups. In addition, Stewart helped develop action plans to implement AZ’s federal government affairs objectives, as well as enhanced the company’s reputation and advanced its legislative and external communications agenda with members of the Democratic Party.

Stewart began her political career as a legislative assistant to Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). After two years, she then served as legislative director for Congressman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY).

Stewart also works with several philanthropic entities, including the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council, the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Annual Fundraising Committee and is active with the American Council of Young Political Leaders. She received her B.A. in political science from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1993, her M.A. in political management from George Washington University in 1999 and is currently a Ph.D. candidate at American University.

“Broderick and Jennifer bring extensive capabilities and experience to Bryan Cave. We look forward to their addition and future with the firm,” said Jack Oliver, chairman of Bryan Cave Strategies LLC.

Founded in 2005, Bryan Cave Strategies LLC provides government relations and strategic counsel to corporations, trade associations and non-pro?t organizations. Based on their findings, the publication ranks firms in the U.S. and 64 other geographic jurisdictions. The rankings reflect the state of the market between September 2006 and January 2007.

Managing Intellectual Property is part of the Euromoney Legal Media Group, with offices in London, Hong Kong and New York. It is now firmly established as the leading international magazine for IP owners with more than 8,000 readers across the globe and covering all aspects of IP practice worldwide.
