NORTHEAST BLACK LAW STUDENTS ASSOCIATION TO HOLD ANNUAL CONVENTION IN HARTFORD
The Northeast Black Law Students Association, the regional arm of the National Black Law Students Association, will hold its 2006-2007 Regional Convention at the Hartford Marriott Downtown from February 22-25.
The theme of this year’s convention is “Beyond Expectations: Shattering the Status Quo.” More than 200 black law students from the Northeast will convene in Hartford to further their professional and academic development through seminars, community service projects, and the Frederick Douglass Moot Court and Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial competitions. Bingham McCutchen LLP is the title sponsor of the convention.
“The convention focuses on creating longstanding relationships with each other,” said NEBLSA regional chair Maurice Headley, a third-year student at the University of Connecticut School of Law. “It also encourages us as future leaders to go back and make not only the legal community more diverse, but society in general.”
Participants will have the opportunity to attend several professional-development panels, including an open forum among law professors and attendees discussing the recent New York Times article “Lawyers Debate Why Blacks Lag at Major Firms,” which outlined a study suggesting that law-school grades may play a role. In addition, convention attendees will mentor local high school students on interviewing skills, resume building and other career essentials, as well as provide them with an introduction to the legal profession.
A welcome reception will be held Thursday night, February 22 at the University of Connecticut School of Law. This event is sponsored by Bingham McCutchen and the Anthony J. Smits International Scholarship Fund at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Speakers at this reception will include Bingham McCutchen partners and Bingham Consulting Group principals Thurgood Marshall Jr. and Ralph Martin, who is also the former district attorney of Suffolk County, Mass.
Members of the media who are interested in attending the convention should contact Headley, the northeast regional chair, at northeast@nblsa.org.

The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA), the largest student-run organization in America, has more than 200 chapters at law schools throughout the country. These chapters represent more than 6,000 black law students in six regions, encompassing 48 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. The organization is designed to promote the academic and professional achievement of black law students. The Northeast Black Law Students Association (NEBLSA) is one of six regional chapters in the United States.

Frost Brown Todd and Morris Communications Join Forces to Offer Ohio Government Relations Services to Clients
Frost Brown Todd (“FBT”) announced today a new strategic alliance with Brian Morris and Morris Communications as part of its commitment to continuously find ways to help clients meet business challenges and take advantage of opportunities. Through this collaboration, FBT can deliver a comprehensive menu of government relations services to clients seeking to navigate Ohio’s new political and public policy landscape.

“Ohio hasn’t seen this kind of political change in almost two decades,” explained Dick Erickson, Frost Brown Todd’s Co-Managing Member. “We wanted to make sure that our clients have access to resources that can help them better understand the new political environment and determined the best way to do that was to strategically align with someone who has significant experience in governmental relations.”

A former communications professional for former Secretary of State and current U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, Brian Morris brings nearly 30 years of strategic communications, political campaign and lobbying experience to the new collaboration with FBT.

Morris Communications will operate out of Frost Brown Todd’s Columbus office located on West Broad Street. This strategic affiliation to provide government relations in Ohio will follow the path forged by Hunter Bates’ The Bates Capital Group LLC, a government relations firm located in Kentucky and Washington, DC. Bates has been providing similar services to FBT’s clients since 2003.

According to Morris, “Government relations can range from something as relatively “small” as helping Frost Brown Todd clients meet key decision makers, to something as “large” as an all-out lobbying campaign. This alliance is about solving problems and securing opportunities for FBT clients as efficiently and strategically as possible. We will build on the current strong relationships between the Firm’s clients and attorneys to deliver smart solutions.
