Women For Democracy Celebrates Women Leaders in Government at Firm
Jenner & Block recently hosted a Women's Summit in its Chicago office celebrating the historic election of the first woman Speaker of the House – Nancy Pelosi. The event also celebrated local women elected officials and the role of women in politics. The event was organized by Women for Democracy and Fair Elections, a non-profit, non-partisan group of women leaders from the Chicagoland area formed to discuss issues of importance to women, their family and the community.

Jenner & Block Partner Gail M. Morse, Chair of the Firm's State and Local Tax Practice, provided welcoming remarks at the event.

A highlight of the night included the presentation by Tammy Duckworth, Director of the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs and former U.S. Army Major who lost both of her legs when the helicopter she was piloting was shot down in the war in Iraq. Ms. Duckworth, also a recent candidate for Congress, spoke on the challenges facing women as leaders and reflected on her own personal experiences and the leadership lessons she has learned in the Army and on the campaign trail. “Leadership is not always in the big battles, but sometimes in the small gestures that you don’t think about,” she said. She told the attendees that by speaking up and voicing concerns, opinions and suggestions, women can empower change.

Additional speakers at the event included Shelley Davis, Director of Programs at Chicago Foundation for Women; Maria Socorro Pesqueira, President & CEO of Mujeres Latinas en Accion; and Rikki Jones, Chair of Cook County Democratic Women.

“This event was an opportunity for women leaders in the Chicagoland area to come together at this historic time to celebrate the strides women have made in elected office and discuss ways in which woman can continue to move forward as leaders in public service,” concluded Ms. Morse.

Wind Power Team Joins Chadbourne & Parke in Los Angeles
The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP announced today that Edward Zaelke and Adam Umanoff have joined the Firm’s renewable energy practice as partners in the Los Angeles office. Their focus is on wind power and other alternative energy sources, bolstering Chadbourne’s nationally recognized practice in this market.

Chadbourne Managing Partner Charles K. O’Neill said, “This is an exciting move for Chadbourne and our clients. Ed and Adam are nationally recognized names in the alternative energy sphere. Joining forces with lawyers of their quality and reputation solidifies our excellent results in 2006 and puts a powerful wind behind our sails for 2007.”

Mr. Zaelke, 48 years old, and Mr. Umanoff, 47 years old, are joining Chadbourne from the Los Angeles office of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, where they were partners. Mr. Zaelke was the head of the Renewable Energy Practice Group, which concentrated on project development and finance. Mr. Umanoff worked on the development and financing of energy projects, with an emphasis on the wind sector.

Both are widely recognized as leading attorneys involved in renewable energy development in the United States and bring strong industry credentials and experience to their new positions.

Mr. Zaelke is the current President of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and has served as a member of the AWEA’s Board of Directors since 2002. He is also a frequent speaker and lecturer on wind energy development and finance issues. He has been leading a group that is involved in all aspects of alternative energy development, including power purchase agreements, siting and other real property issues, governmental approvals, equipment purchase and sale agreements, construction and EPC contracts and equity and debt financing. His clients include a number of major developers and investors in the wind energy field. Mr. Zaelke was listed in Southern California Super Lawyers in 2006 and 2007 and in Best Lawyers in America (for project finance law) in 2007.

Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, Mr. Umanoff served initially as General Counsel and later as President and Chief Executive Officer of Enron Wind Corp., at the time the world's third largest wind turbine manufacturer and wind project developer, with annual revenues of approximately $800 million. His experience there involved North American and European acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, all aspects of project development, technology transactions and debt and equity financings. During his legal career, Mr. Umanoff has developed a broad background in project development, equipment supply, construction, and operation and maintenance services, project finance, technology and corporate and M&A services, with an emphasis on wind and other renewable energy projects.

Their arrival enhances Chadbourne’s already strong presence in renewable energy. The Firm was named “Renewables Legal Advisor of the Year” in 2005 by Infrastructure Journal. Among the Chadbourne lawyers involved in wind deals are Keith Martin, a Washington, DC partner and co-head of the project finance practice, and Adam Wenner, a prominent regulatory lawyer also in Washington. Both Mr. Martin and Mr. Wenner are recognized names in the U.S. wind market. Other Chadbourne attorneys working on wind deals include New York office partners Paul Weber, Rich Sonkin and Charlie Hord.

The Firm has worked on a large number of wind farms deals, both in the United States and abroad, and has served most of the major U.S. wind developers on development, financing and acquisitions matters. In addition, Chadbourne lawyers have published extensively on legal, tax and regulatory issues in wind projects in the Firm’s Project Finance NewsWire publication, which Mr. Martin edits.

“The combination of these four prominent wind industry partners creates a dynamic, highly capable team operating on both coasts,” added Mr. O’Neill. “Chadbourne is already one of about a half-dozen U.S. law firms that are the dominant players in the U.S. wind power market. These new additions will reinforce and extend our leading role in this industry.”

The wind power industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the global energy business, enjoying a 26% compound annual growth rate over the last five years. Most industry experts expect such growth to continue over the next five years, with the U.S. market being among the growth leaders. Over $4 billion in capital was invested in new wind projects in the United States in 2006, as the industry added 2,454 megawatts (MW) of capacity in 2006 to reach a cumulative U.S. installed wind energy capacity of 11,603 MW. Texas is the leader in cumulative installed capacity, and the top five states in new installations are Texas, Washington, California, New York and Minnesota.
