Fishman Teaches Trial Advocacy at Harvard
Litigation partner Paul J. Fishman taught trial advocacy to second- and third-year students enrolled in Harvard Law School's Trial Advocacy Workshop during the January 2007 winter term. The workshop, led by Visiting Professor Peter L. Murray, offers students intensive training in trial analysis, skills, and techniques, including opening statements, development of witness testimony on direct and cross-examination, use of demonstrative and substantive exhibits, impeachment, expert testimony, and summations.

FKSA also hosted a program by Mr. Fishman titled "My Cousin Vinny and the Art of Cross-Examination," which was open to all Harvard Law School students. Drawing on his years of trial experience both at the U.S. Department of Justice and in private practice, Mr. Fishman discussed preparation for cross-examination, framing questions to get the desired answers, and the use of tone and demeanor to connect with the jury. He used clips from the hit 1992 film My Cousin Vinny to illustrate his presentation, pointing out the very good (and sometimes very bad) techniques depicted as Vincent Gambini tries his first case. The program was sponsored by the Harvard Law School Office of Career Services.
