Robert A. Boonin named Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Trial Counsel
Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Robert A. Boonin has been named a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Trial Counsel. The American Academy of Trial Counsel is a lawyer honorary established to reflect the new face of the American bar. The purpose of the Academy is to recognize highly qualified lawyers, to provide additional sources for professional development, and to promote advocacy and ethical standards in the practice of law. Membership is limited, representing less than one percent of American lawyers and is by invitation only.

Mr. Boonin is based in Butzel Long's Ann Arbor office. His practice is largely concentrated in the areas of labor, employment discrimination, wage and hour matters, public contract law and education law. He has represented public and private sector clients across the country in wrongful termination, employment discrimination, wage and hour class and other actions, tenure proceedings and other employment-related lawsuits, as well as in arbitrations, labor negotiations, fact-findings, unfair labor practices and representational proceedings and labor strikes.

Mr. Boonin is active in national and state bar association sections in labor and employment law and public contract law, including the Fair Labor Standards Legislation Committee of the American Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section. He also is a past president and Board member of the Michigan Council of School Attorneys, a member of the NSBA's Council of School Attorneys and a member of the local chapter of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (formerly IRRA). Mr. Boonin currently co-chairs the Washtenaw County Bar Association’s Trial Practice Section, and is active with the Washtenaw Chapter of the American Red Cross. He is a past Chair of the Washtenaw County Bar Association's Employment Law Section, and recently completed six years on the Ann Arbor YMCA Board of Directors.

Mr. Boonin frequently publishes articles and makes presentations at conferences on various topics involving labor and employment law matters, including discrimination and wage and hour law. Among his publications and presentations are: "The Constitutional Constraints in Dealing with Drug Abuse in the Schools," Michigan Bar Journal (November 1989); "Wage and Hour Law for Michigan Public Employers," Michigan Public Employment and Labor Relations Law (MPELRA 1994); "Damages Recoverable in the Employment Case," Michigan Wrongful Discharge and Employment Law (ICLE 1994); and "Fair Labor Standards Act Update," (ICLE 2006).

Mr. Boonin is an honors graduate of The University of Michigan Law School (J.D. 1985) and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A. 1976). He also holds a Masters Degree in Labor and Industrial Relations from Michigan State University (M.L.I.R. 1980). Mr. Boonin is a resident of Ann Arbor.

BC Partner to Chair PLI Real Estate Contracts Program
New York Partner Matthew J. Leeds will chair the annual Practising Law Institute (PLI) program on residential real estate contracts and closings April 18. This is the 13th year Leeds has chaired the PLI program, which annually is among the best attended.

Leeds will lead a discussion of negotiation strategies, drafting tips and closings. The program also will involve analysis of the types of title insurance and mortgages that are available to buyers and sellers of single-family homes, cooperatives and condominiums.

Leeds writes frequently and has chaired or been on the faculty of numerous other real estate programs, including those on transactional real estate, residential and commercial cooperatives and condominiums and title insurance. He is past chair of the Executive Committee of the Real Property Section of the New York State Bar Association and is a former chair of that section’s Condominiums and Cooperatives Committee.

Bernan Press Collaborates with Bryan Cave LLP
Bernan Press announced that they will collaborate with Bryan Cave to enhance editions of the WTO Dispute Settlement Decisions in the Berman’s Annotated Reporter.

Bryan Cave’s Senior International Trade Advisor Felipe Berer and Senior Trade Policy Advisor Mark Nguyen are editors for the new series.

Curt Dombek, Managing Partner of Bryan Cave’s International Trade Practice adds, “We are pleased to provide more practical insight to Bernan’s publications on how WTO decisions might affect multinational companies and other parties, given our work with clients who operate at the global level.”

Berer is a member of the International Trade Client Service Group. His practice involves client representation in trade remedy investigations before the U.S. Department of Commerce (“DOC) and the U.S. International Trade Commission (“ITC”), and advisory work on international trade matters, including compliance requirements associated with cross-border trade policies and regulations, World Trade Organization rules and dispute settlement proceedings, international customs, U.S. bilateral and regional trade agreements, and trade policy developments in the U.S. and Latin America.

Nguyen is member of the International Trade Client Service Group. He assists clients in analyzing, negotiating and meeting compliance requirements associated with cross-border trade policy and regulation; the implications of U.S. bilateral, regional trade agreements; and World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

Prior to joining Bryan Cave in 2005, Mr. Nguyen managed a global law firm’s WTO and trade advisory services in Washington D.C. and Geneva, Switzerland. He also has worked at the WTO and U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Office to the WTO in Geneva.

Brown Rudnick Represents Foreign Private Issuer in $600 Million Cross-Border Credit Facility and Refinancing
Brown Rudnick, a premier international law firm, recently advised a foreign private issuer in connection with a $600 million cross-border credit facility and refinancing. The firm acted as primary U.S. counsel to the issuer. A major New York-based investment bank acted as lead underwriter.

Albert J. Pinzón, a partner in Brown Rudnick’s Structured Finance Group, led a multidisciplinary legal team of attorneys practicing in Finance, Corporate, and Tax Law. Commenting on the successful closing, Mr. Pinzón said, “It was fantastic to work with a great team of professionals both within and outside the firm. I expect this to be the first of numerous cross-border capital markets transactions including a few involving emerging market issuers.

Equifax Purchases Talx
Blackwell Sanders served as local Missouri corporate counsel to credit reporting agency Equifax Inc. in its $1.2 billion acquisition of Talx Corp., which provides employment verification and related human-resources and payroll services. The acquisition transaction team was led by Jim Goettsch working with corporate attorneys Brennan Tucker and Michelle Torline.

Equifax is one of the largest sources of consumer and commercial data. The company employs 4,600 in 13 countries and has $1.2 billion in revenue. St. Louis, Mo., based Talx reported third quarter revenue of $197 million. Completion of the deal is expected in the second or early third quarter.

Weil Gotshal Advises GE in its First Investment in Natural Gas Storage for $65 US Million
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP advised GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of General Electric (NYSE: GE), in connection with its first investment in natural gas storage. GE acquired a preferred equity interest in an underground salt dome storage project, The Bobcat, in Louisiana from Haddington Energy Partners III LP, a Houston-based, energy-focused private equity fund. The $65 million investment enables GE Energy Financial Services to expand in midstream energy, where it already co-owns pipelines, retail distribution and gas processing assets.

R&C LandLaw Partner Speaks at Boston Bar Association Seminar on Streamlined Permitting Legislation
Brian W. Blaesser, a partner in Robinson & Cole's Land Use Group, recently spoke at the Boston Bar Association's Seminar on "Recent Developments in Land Use Permitting," in which he discussed implementation of the Permitting/Appeals Reform Act, Chapter 205 of the Acts of 2006—legislation which he helped to draft.

Chapter 205 significantly reforms the appeal process in Massachusetts and addresses the issue of frivolous appeals. Mr. Blaesser focused his remarks on Section 15 of the Act which creates a separate session of the Land Court Department entitled the "Permit Session" which is focused on speedily hearing and deciding land use and environmental permitting appeals.
