Freshfields boosts London arbitration practice
Responding to the growing importance of the London market for international arbitration work, top-ranked international arbitration firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has announced plans to bolster its London practice with the relocation of three of its most highly-rated practitioners to join Geoff Nicholas and his team.

* Nigel Rawding, a partner since 1991, returns to the London office in Spring 2007, having spent nearly two years working alongside fellow leading practitioner Lucy Reed in the firm's New York office.
* Constantine Partasides, based in Paris with Jan Paulsson's team since 1998 and a partner since 2004, returns in Summer 2007 to London where he first trained and then qualified into the firm's dispute resolution practice.
* Brian King, a New York-qualified lawyer based in Amsterdam since 1999 and a partner since 2002, also moves to London in Summer 2007.

All three are ranked amongst the leading practitioners in the field, most recently in Global Arbitration Review's Who's Who of International Arbitration Lawyers for 2007. Their combined experience includes numerous high-value and high-profile cross-border investment disputes as well as commercial arbitrations.

Commenting on the move, global practice group head Jan Paulsson observed, 'We are fortunate to have in our international arbitration group some of the leading individual practitioners in the field, whose expertise and experience contribute to our ranking as the number one firm in this practice area. The practice has a long tradition of transferring and combining talent between and within its flagship offices, including long-term postings as well as the day-to-day assembling of multi-jurisdictional and multi-lingual teams for individual cases.

London is now the world's leading arbitration venue and we are recognising the importance of this development by deploying our resources accordingly.'

Baker Named Advisory Chairman to Investment Group of New TXU Owners
Former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker, III will serve as advisory chairman to the investment group of new owners of Dallas-based electricity provider TXU Corp., the company announced today.

Baker's appointment was included in the company's news release that provided details of a definitive merger agreement under which an investor group led by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) and Texas Pacific Group (TPG) will acquire TXU in a transaction valued at $45 billion.

“One very important reason for my participation in this transaction is the serious and substantial commitment to a new direction for TXU that takes into account my concerns about the environment,” Baker said. “Two years ago in my hometown of Houston, I said publicly that we need to pay more attention to ways to protect our environment and that we needed to begin an orderly transition to cleaner energy.

"TXU's new approach on these issues is a critical and responsible step in reducing Texas' contribution to climate change. I look forward to advising the new owners of TXU in their efforts to foster a sustainable environmental model that will permit responsible economic development and that will serve our state and nation well.
