Cooper Levenson Education Fund Applications Available Online
Cooper Levenson, an Atlantic City-based law firm, has announced the creation of an education fund to benefit college-bound Atlantic County residents. The scholarship was established to kick off a year-long celebration of the firm’s 50th anniversary – and in honor of the practice’s founding partner James L. Cooper, a man who dedicated his life to the law, education, civil rights and community service.

“As a firm with its roots in Atlantic City, we have always felt an obligation to take an active role in the betterment of the community, said Lloyd D. Levenson, CEO. “In keeping with the example set by our founder Jim Cooper, we decided that one of the best ways to build a better community is to invest in the education of the next generation. Because of this belief, we chose to help local students – high school seniors who demonstrate civic responsibility and academic achievement – achieve their goals for a higher education.”

Nomination materials and application information will be sent to Atlantic County high school officials in March 2007 and will be posted on the firm’s website for downloading. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2007. Applicants must be college-bound seniors in high school. Preference will be given to Atlantic City residents. Scholarship(s) of up to a total of $2,500 will be awarded for use at an accredited college or university.

Bruening Appointed Deputy Executive Director of CIPL at Hunton & Williams
"Hunton & Williams LLP today announced Paula J. Bruening has joined the firm as Deputy Executive Director for The Center for Information Policy Leadership at Hunton & Williams and Senior Policy Advisor at the firm. Bruening was counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology, a nonprofit, public interest organization, where she focused on cyber-privacy issues. She will be based in the law firm's Washington office.

""Paula brings the special skills necessary to create collaborative solutions in an information age,"" said Marty Abrams, the Center's executive director, in announcing the appointment. ""She understands the intersection between policy and technology, which is so important when looking at emerging privacy issues, including those arising in technologies such as RFID and social networks.""

""Paula's nongovernmental organization perspective on privacy and information security issues complements and further balances our work,"" said Orson Swindle, senior policy advisor and chair of security initiatives at the Center. ""She believes in the importance of taking 'steps to solutions' and will help the Center raise awareness among industry leaders and decision makers of the critical realm of information security and of the differing regional privacy regimes around the globe. I very much look forward to working with her.""

""Privacy laws around the world are changing,"" added Maureen Cooney, counsel in the firm's Washington office, who also serves as senior policy advisor for global privacy strategies at the Center. ""There is an evolution in the industry in terms of technology and companies want to know what security measures need to be built into future systems. Paula has worked on cutting-edge technology and brings that experience to the firm, which will help the Center prepare businesses for the next generation of privacy laws.""

""Center member companies are delighted with Paula's addition to Center Leadership,"" said Sandra Hughes, chief privacy executive at Procter & Gamble. ""Many of us worked with Paula both on the RFID Privacy Guidelines and APEC Privacy Framework. Few leaders are better at bridging differences between various business and consumer constituencies.""

At The Center for Information Policy Leadership, Bruening joins well-known privacy professionals Abrams, Swindle, and Fred H. Cate. Bruening will also work closely with Hunton & Williams' noted privacy lawyers Cooney, Lisa J. Sotto, and Christopher Kuner. Bruening's work will also involve regular collaboration with a diverse, vibrant team of privacy and information security authorities who understand that information does not remain within a country's borders and must be monitored on a global basis as it travels to meet both individual consumer and corporate needs.

Bruening received her undergraduate degree from John Carroll University and law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and is a frequent author and lecturer on information policy issues in the United States and Europe. She began her work in information policy at the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment. Prior to the CDT, she was the Director of Compliance and Policy for TRUSTe, the online privacy seal program, where she was responsible for compliance and for working with the government on evolving privacy policy. While with TRUSTe, she served on the Federal Trade Commission Advisory Committee on Access and Security. Before that, Bruening was Senior Attorney-Advisor for the Office of Chief Counsel, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, US Department of Commerce, where she worked closely with the White House to advise the Clinton Administration on a wide range of domestic and international electronic commerce and Internet issues. She has also served as an onsite consultant to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris, France and has worked with governments of emerging and transitional economies on issues of telecommunications liberalization and e-commerce and privacy law."

Hunton & Williams Joins Partnership Effort to Increase Number of Minority Lawyers in Charlotte
"The City of Charlotte’s business and legal communities are fully committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession. Statistics show that Charlotte lags behind the national average for its number of minority lawyers in local law firms by as much as 50 percent* — an alarming statistic that Hunton & Williams would like to see reversed. So, the firm has committed to be part of an exciting program to help increase the number of minority lawyers in the city.

Todd Brown, a partner in the firm’s Charlotte office and chair of the firm’s Diversity Activities Committee, is leading Hunton & Williams’ participation. The program, spearheaded by the Mecklenburg County Bar Association, brings first-year minority law students to the city to take part in a 12-week legal clerkship program. The law students gain invaluable experience working their first six weeks in a law firm setting and their remaining six weeks in a corporate legal department. Bank of America Corporation, Wachovia Corporation, Duke Energy Corporation, Goodrich Corporation, TIAA-CREF, and Compass Group have already signed up to participate in the program, as have at least nine law firms in addition to Hunton & Williams.

Hunton & Williams has been aboard since the program was first initiated last year. Five students were welcomed to Charlotte in the summer of 2006, including Chike Egbuniwe, now a second-year law student at the University of Notre Dame, who split his time between Hunton & Williams and Duke Energy. Chike is one of four law students who participated in the program’s inaugural year and who will be returning to Charlotte this year to work as summer associates in the traditional summer associate programs of Charlotte law firms. These four returning second-year law students will be involved in the program helping recruit to the City of Charlotte what the organizers hope will be ten new first year students in the 2007 program."
