Federal Government Relations Director Jeffrey D. McCausland Quoted on Troop Readiness and Deployment
Dr. Jeffrey D. McCausland, director of Federal Government Relations in Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney's Washington, D.C., office, was quoted in the February 25, 2007, edition of The New York Times in an article on increased troop deployment to Iraq and its effects on military resources.

McCausland noted that in order to make sure that all troops who land in Iraq are properly trained for that mission, a wider spectrum of desired training is sometimes deferred.

"At the end of the day, strategy is the management of risk, whether personal or military strategy," he told the Times. "The question is, how much risk are we willing to live with? We are taking a significant amount of strategic risk today because, if you look at our ground forces, we have pulled almost everything out of the box already. So if a major problem arises somewhere else, what do we turn to?"

As a consequence, he said, the United States has lost much of its historic military flexibility.

"We know that," he said. "So do our adversaries. To some degree, Iran and North Korea can play this round of poker more boldly.

Poyner & Spruill Wins Gold Star Award from Rocky Mount Area United Way
Poyner & Spruill LLP, one of North Carolina’s oldest and largest law firms, recently received the Gold Star Award from the Rocky Mount Area United Way and presented the organization with over $6,000 raised through the firm’s worksite campaign. The Gold Star Award is given to companies that have raised the most money per employee through their United Way fundraising campaign.

Every year, the Rocky Mount Area United Way gives awards to select businesses and organizations based upon the amount of money raised per capita through their worksite campaign. Organizations that raise $100 or more per employee receive the Gold Star Award.

“We are proud to receive this recognition and equally proud of our employees who have supported this campaign,” said Steve Rowe, a Partner with Poyner & Spruill who also serves on the Rocky Mount Area United Way Board of Directors.

“We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the Poyner & Spruill office as well as all organizations that ran a United Way campaign,” said Ginny Mohrbutter, Executive Director of the Rocky Mount Area United Way. “It is through their commitment that we are able to continue to help change lives and shape the future of our community.”

The Rocky Mount Area United Way’s fundraising efforts are coordinated in a variety of ways throughout the community, with the majority of their donations coming from the corporate sector. Approximately 70 businesses in the Rocky Mount area participate in a United Way campaign. Poyner & Spruill’s campaign ran from September 2006 until November 2006.

“The United Way provides the ideal opportunity for us to give back to the community in which we serve and live, and we look forward to continuing to support our local chapter in the years to come,” said Karen Bulluck, who served as the Workplace Campaign Coordinator for the Poyner & Spruill office.
