Jeh Johnson Interviewed on The Today Show
Litigation partner Jeh Johnson, one of the leading fund-raisers for Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign, was interviewed by NBC's Andrea Mitchell for a segment on the primary campaign between Obama and Hillary Clinton. The interview appeared on The Today Show this morning, which focused on the importance of the black vote.

Paul Hastings Advises Lehman Brothers on Exit from Joint Venture Ownership of Sanderson and St. Martin’s Lane Hotels
Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker (Europe) LLP (Paul Hastings), a leading international law firm, has advised Lehman Brothers on its exit from the joint venture with Morgan Hotels that owns the London hotels, The Sanderson and St. Martins Lane, for a substantial sum.

Lehman Brothers acquired its interest in The Sanderson and St Martins Lane hotels six years ago when it supported the buyout of the Burford property group.

The transaction was led by partners Linda Fletcher (real estate) and Ronan O’Sullivan (corporate), assisted by senior associates, Donna Goldsworthy and Hayley Buckley. Freshfields acted for Morgan Hotels.

This transaction demonstrates the continuing strong relationships between Paul Hastings and Lehman Brothers.

O'MELVENY & MYERS REPRESENTS INVESTORS IN TRANSERA COMMUNICATIONS FINANCING
O'Melveny & Myers recently represented a consortium of investors, including Apax Partners, Storm Ventures, and Accel Partners, in the $10 million Series C financing of virtual call center solution provider Transera Communications. The financing was completed in November 2006.

The O'Melveny & Myers legal team included Silicon Valley's Warren Lazarow, Hooman Shahlavi, and Stephanie Sheng.

Fulbright IP Team Wins Summary Judgment for Independent Technologies
Fulbright intellectual property practice leader and partner Paul Krieger and senior counsel John Schneider won a summary judgment for Independent Technologies, Inc. (IT) in a non-infringement patent case filed by TIP Systems.

On February 28, Judge Gilmore of the Southern District of Texas granted Fulbright’s motion for summary judgment, dismissing TIP Systems’ claim that Independent Technologies has infringed on two patents for “inmate phones;” specifically, IT sells phones to correctional facilities.

Krieger heads up Fulbright’s intellectual property practice. He has been lead counsel in more than 50 patent, trademark and copyright lawsuits in courts throughout the United States, and is a frequent lecturer and author on intellectual property topics to groups of attorneys and business executives in the United States, Europe and Asia.

Schneider’s practice focuses primarily on patents, trade secrets and unfair competition. He has prosecuted and litigated patents before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In the realm of patent portfolio development, he has been involved in negotiating and drafting license agreements and transactions involving the transfer of intellectual property assets.

Sandoz Sued Over Schizophrenia Drug Patent
Japanese pharmaceutical company Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. has filed a patent infringement suit against the generics arm of Novartis AG in response to the subsidiary’s bid to obtain U.S. regulatory approval for a generic version of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder treatment Abilify. Otsuka filed the lawsuit in New Jersey against Sandoz Inc., seeking to bar Sandoz’ proposed generics from entering the U.S. market until the expiration of an Otsuka patent. Finnegan Henderson is representing Otsuka as of counsel in this case.

Dorsey Employment Group Presents a Series of "Quirky Questions"
Dorsey partners David Lauth, Roy Ginsburg and Joseph Hammel presented in the Star Tribune a series of "quirky questions" for employers to consider. Based on actual events, the series of questions and answers illustrated important employment law developments from a humerous perspective.

Among the questions, was the appropriate response to an employee injured by a pipe-bomb he had himself brought to work, an Americans With Disabilities claim brought by an employee married to a spouse with sleep apnea, and the use of a video camera to catch an employee using a company computer to download pornography. Dorsey Partner Simon Whitehead Calls Latest Marks & Spencer's European Tax Relief Ruling "Very Encouraging"
Dorsey partner Simon Whitehead considered the latest ruling in the Marks & Spencer tax relief case as "very encouraging," according to the Financial Times. Under the February 20, 2007, UK Court of Appeals judgment, the court confirmed that UK tax laws that de jure deny group relief to a UK resident company for losses sustained by an overseas subsidiary are a violation of European Community law. Instead, The Times reported, a specialist tax tribunal should rule on such loss claims on a case per case basis.
