FORMER JPMORGAN CHASE SENIOR VP/COUNSEL JOINS BINGHAM MCCUTCHEN’S SECURITIES LITIGATION GROUP
Bingham McCutchen LLP announces that Steven N. Machtinger, a former senior vice president and associate general counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co., has joined as a securities litigation partner in the San Francisco office.
Machtinger brings more than 20 years of experience in the securities industry to Bingham, specifically in areas relating to broker-dealers and investment advisers, and officers and directors of public companies. Beginning his career with the SEC in 1974, he later served as chief of enforcement at the San Francisco office.
“Steve’s depth of knowledge and skill in the regulatory, transactional and litigation-related arenas is first-rate,” said Neal E. Sullivan, co-chair of the Securities Area and partner in Bingham’s Washington, DC office. “He knows and understands the issues facing financial institutions. He’s a tremendous asset for Bingham’s growing securities practice and our clients.”
Machtinger handled civil and regulatory litigation, securities arbitrations, and venture capital litigation in his 18 years at JPMorgan Chase and Hambrecht & Quist Group, a banking firm acquired by JPMorgan Chase in 1999. He defended the company against a broad range of claims, including brokerage customer arbitrations, trust account client complaints, securities class actions, and employment discrimination claims. While at the SEC, Machtinger participated in the preparation of the landmark Report of the Staff Special Study of the Options Markets to the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Machtinger noted that Bingham’s reputation in securities litigation and the caliber of lawyers were among the reasons for joining Bingham.
“This is a great opportunity to practice with outstanding lawyers,” said Machtinger, noting that he has worked with Bingham attorneys while at JPMorgan, specifically San Francisco partners Balabanian, Hardy Callcott and Charlene ‘Chuck’ Shimada, and Boston partner David Boch. Machtinger also noted that Bingham’s “platform enables me to broaden my practice while continuing to work with leading financial institutions.”

A 1974 graduate of the University of California, Davis School of Law and 1971 graduate of Harvard College, Machtinger is a past member of the NASD Board of Arbitrators and a past chairman of the San Francisco District Business Conduct Committee of the NASD.

Bill Robinson Leaves Greenebaum to Join Frost Brown Todd
Frost Brown Todd announced today that Wm. T. “Bill” Robinson III has joined the Firm as a Partner on March 5, 2007. Formerly Member-In-Charge of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald’s Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati offices, Robinson cites FBT’s significant regional presence and strong involvement in economic development as reasons for the change.

Robinson brings with him a robust litigation practice, with an emphasis on alternative dispute resolution, antitrust, environmental toxic tort, the insurance industry, land use, medical malpractice defense, product liability, government affairs and economic development incentives and appellate practice. As a member of FBT’s management team, Robinson will Chair the Firm’s Strategic Planning and Expansion Committee, where he will develop and implement a plan to expand the Firm’s presence in the region by growing current offices and expanding new offices in new geographic locations.

“Greenebaum is an outstanding law firm. I am proud to have been associated with them for sixteen years and I wish my friends at Greenebaum the very best,” said Robinson. “With the way I have grown my practice over the past thirty-six years, this move is the next logical step for my career and for the needs of my clients. Frost Brown Todd is positioned for growth and continued success in this region.”

Currently Treasurer of the American Bar Association, Robinson plans on continuing in the leadership of the ABA, including the ABA Board of Governors, the American Bar Foundation, the American Bar Association Retirement Funds, and the American Bar Endowment. In addition to Bill’s involvement in several local, economic, professional and community organizations, he serves on the Policy Board and is Past Chair of the Cincinnati USA Partnership, is founding Board Member and Secretary/Treasurer of the Tri-County Economic Development Corporation, he is a founding Board Member of CincyTech USA and serves on the National Advisory Council of the Freedom Center and on the Stewardship Council of Vision 2015. Chase American Inn of Court.

“We are very pleased that Bill has chosen to join our Firm. When an attorney of his caliber makes the decision to share our mission, it is further indication that we are on the right track, We want to be the “go to” firm in this part of the country and additions like Bill will help us accomplish our goals.” said Dick Erickson, Frost Brown Todd’s Cincinnati-based Co-Managing Member. “Northern Kentucky is a thriving area, home to over a dozen Fortune 500 companies, and opening an office there not only expands our footprint, but places us closer to where many of our clients and attorneys live and work.”

“I have known Bill since law school and many of our other attorneys have also known Bill for years,” said Louisville-based Co-Managing Member Ed Glasscock. “We have had the privilege of working with and against him, over the years, and have been impressed with him every step of the way.
