LeBoeuf Lamb Grows Asia Practice with Opening of Hong Kong Office; Addition of New Managing Partner
The international law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP has announced the expansion of its Asia practice with the opening of a Hong Kong office. The office is co-managed by partners William C. Marcoux and Daniel Liew.

The new office will operate in affiliation with Arthur Marriott & Associates, a Hong Kong law firm. A team of twenty lawyers will be in place by the end of 2007 practicing US, English, and Hong Kong laws and will focus on energy, insurance, corporate and finance, and dispute resolution matters.

"The explosive growth and economic globalization in the Pan-Asian market makes this the perfect time for LeBoeuf Lamb to continue expanding its footprint," said firm Chairman Steven H. Davis, "Daniel's leadership and market knowledge will be great assets as we expand on the success of our first office in Asia located in Beijing."

Prior to joining LeBoeuf Lamb as a managing partner, Mr. Liew was head of the energy and infrastructure practice in Asia for an international law firm and an elected member of the partnership board of such firm. He represents clients in the energy, electricity, utilities, water, telecommunications, infrastructure, and insurance sectors, and regularly advises on mergers and acquisitions, project development, project finance and corporate finance.

Commenting on his move, Mr. Liew said, "LeBoeuf Lamb's culture of global integration together with its worldwide coverage presents significant opportunities to provide clients with seamless, multi-jurisdictional counsel. I look forward to contributing to the firm's continued success and providing legal counsel in Asia to our clients."

Alston & Bird Opens Dallas Office
Alston & Bird LLP, a leading national law firm, announces the opening of an office in Dallas, Texas. The firm also announces the acquisition of Dallas-based Crews, Shepherd & McCarty LLP, a highly regarded litigation firm. The Dallas office will immediately enhance three of the firm’s preeminent practices -- complex commercial litigation, intellectual property litigation, and corporate transactions and compliance.

“Alston & Bird has been serving clients in Dallas and throughout Texas for many years, so this is a natural and logical step for us,” said Richard R. Hays, deputy managing partner and managing partner-elect of Alston & Bird. “This move is part of a national effort to better serve clients in the areas in which we are experiencing substantial growth. On any given day, teams of our attorneys are likely present in Dallas or in the region. With a Dallas office and with the addition of partners, beginning with the Crews, Shepherd firm, we are in a position to offer additional support on those matters and expand our practice.”

“Texas courts are already active venues for many Alston & Bird clients in the area of complex litigation,” notes Hays, “and given the firm’s historical and highly credentialed expertise in the area of intellectual property, a presence in Dallas further bolsters our significant IP litigation practice. We also currently represent a number of Dallas-based Fortune 500 companies in corporate matters, and these clients have responded very positively to an Alston & Bird Dallas office.”

“Alston & Bird is a great firm and joining them was an easy decision,” said John R. Crews. “We were attracted to the firm’s legal talent, depth and breadth of experience, and equally to their culture, which has been recognized nationally for a number of years. Opening the Dallas office with a combination of our existing litigation practice with other of Alston’s finest practices gives us a great start and makes Alston an immediate competitive force in the region.”

About Alston & Bird’s Core Dallas Practices

Complex Commercial Litigation
Alston & Bird’s 280 litigators have handled complex commercial disputes for domestic and international corporations in every state in the U.S. and numerous foreign jurisdictions, serving as national counsel, regional counsel or national class action counsel in high-visibility, landmark litigation. For the last two years, Corporate Counsel magazine has named Alston & Bird among the top 10 law firms in the U.S. mentioned by corporate counsel as their go-to law firm for litigation matters. Most recently a team of Alston & Bird’s litigators, with co-counsel in Oregon, led efforts on an international fraud case that resulted in a verdict subsequently ranked as #1 among the largest U.S. verdicts for 2006 by The National Law Journal. Thirty-eight of the firm’s litigators have been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for a number of years.

Intellectual Property Litigation
Alston & Bird has one of the largest IP practices among general practice law firms in the United States, with 130 attorneys practicing IP law 100 percent of the time. The firm’s IP practice is consistently ranked by major publications, including Fortune, The Best Lawyers in America, the Guide to the World’s Leading Trademark Law Practitioners, IP Worldwide, Managing Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Today. Corporate Representation
With more than 270 corporate attorneys throughout the firm, Alston & Bird handles an array of business, corporate governance, finance, M&A, private equity, and securities matters for both domestic and foreign clients across all industries. Kurt James quoted on Chapter 40B petition in Banker & Tradesman
Kurt James, partner in the firm's Real Estate and Business Departments and chair of the firm’s Affordable Housing and Community Development practice, was quoted in “The Teller: Chapter and Re-Verse,” which appeared in Banker & Tradesman on September 3.

The article discusses a petition to Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley intended to repeal the state’s comprehensive permitting law, also known as Chapter 40B. Chapter 40B requires at least 20 percent of residential units to be reserved for lower-income households. The statute has been used by developers to build mixed-income housing in communities where less than 10 percent of the housing stock is affordable.

The petition doesn’t block developers who already have obtained 40B permits, but it would hinder those without local building permits.

The article also quotes an August 30 letter to the Office of the Attorney General written by Kurt and another member of REBA (Real Estate Bar Association). “The holders of comprehensive permits have invested reasonably in these permits, and this proposal would destroy the value of their investment by invalidating the permits…it is highly unlikely that either the general court or the municipalities will be willing to provide such substantial compensation for takings they did not authorize,” the attorneys wrote in their letter.
