Benjamin E. Rosenberg to Join New York State Attorney General's Office
Dechert LLP announced today that partner Benjamin E. Rosenberg is taking a leave of absence to join the New York State Attorney General's office and handle the government's case against Richard Grasso, former chairman of the New York Stock Exchange.

Rosenberg joined Dechert as a partner in 2005 and focuses on white collar criminal defense and securities litigation. He defends executives and corporations in connection with governmental investigations and proceedings of federal grand juries and offices of the United States Attorney, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Attorney General of New York, and the New York District Attorney. He also represents clients before the federal appellate courts (the Second, Sixth and Eleventh Circuits), and in the New York appellate courts (including the New York Court of Appeals) on both civil and criminal matters.

His clients are from the fields of investment banking, mutual fund management, private equity investing (principally hedge funds), industrial manufacturing, radio broadcasting, and pollution control, among others. Cases have included representing a financial institution under investigation by a self regulatory organization for market manipulation; representing a university professor in a case brought by the United States involving allegations of fraud, breach of contract and violations of the federal False Claims Act; and obtaining a subject matter jurisdiction dismissal for U.S. Trust in a purported class action alleging breach of duties under ERISA.

From 1990 to 1994, Rosenberg was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York in the criminal division prosecuting violent and white collar crimes.

Rosenberg is a graduate of Harvard University (A.B., magna cum laude, 1981) and Harvard Law School (J.D., magna cum laude, 1985), where he was editor and treasurer of the Harvard Law Review. Following graduation from law school, he clerked for the Honorable Judge Edward R. Becker of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

He has written extensively on constitutional issues concerning criminal procedure. His articles have appeared in academic journals as well as in the New York Law Journal.

David A. Ruiz Receives The Marshall Memorial Fellowship for Emerging U.S. Leaders
The law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP (Calfee) is pleased to announce that David A. Ruiz, a litigation associate with the firm, was selected as an American Marshall Memorial Fellow by the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Ruiz will travel to Europe in 2007 in an intensive three-week study program designed to give emerging American leaders a more comprehensive understanding of Europe. American Fellows will meet formally and informally with a range of policymakers and prominent members of the business, government, political, NGO and media communities. He was selected by the Cleveland Foundation as one of six regional candidates for the fellowship and was then awarded one of 57 fellowships by the German Marshall Fund in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Ruiz litigates and tries cases for public and private companies involved in complex business, commercial and antitrust disputes. He also serves as a pro bono attorney for the Cleveland Legal Aid Society. He was inducted into Kaleidoscope Magazine’s Cuarenta/Cuarenta “40 under 40” Class of 2006, honoring Hispanic leaders in Northeast Ohio for their community achievements and is a member of the Young Latino Network’s Executive Board and its legal advisor. Mr. Ruiz is also a member of the Hispanic Roundtable’s Education Committee and has served as an advisor to the Coalition of Ohio Latinos, focused on immigration reform.

Ruiz stated, “It is truly an honor to receive this fellowship. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to serve as an ambassador not only for our region, but also for the United States as a whole. I look forward to sharing, within our region and elsewhere, my experiences and the lessons that I learn.

Beth S. Gotthelf featured ABA Environmental Law Workshop
Butzel Long attorney and shareholder Beth S. Gotthelf will be a featured participant in a two-day workshop from March 9 to 10, 2007 as part of the American Bar Association, Section of Environment, Energy and Resources 36th Conference on Environmental Law. The workshop is entitled, "Preparing Green Lawyers for Practice in a Changing Environment: Laying the Foundation."

The workshop brings top environmental law faculty together with practitioners from a variety of backgrounds to explore challenges and opportunities associated with preparation for practice in the current legal market.

Ms. Gotthelf practices in the areas of environmental, energy and land use law and regulation. She represents and counsels a diverse mix of clients in numerous matters throughout the country. These matters include: permitting under and compliance with local, state and federal air, wastewater, stormwater and water regulations; state and federal enforcement cases; compliance audits; remediation of contaminated sites; ethanol and other alternative energy plants; wetland permits; addressing endangered species; tax and other financial incentives under Brownfield and other programs; removal of underground storage tanks; superfund (state and federal); environmental insurance claims; administrative procedures; treatment, storage and disposal of solid and hazardous waste; landfills; occupational safety and health, and land use.

She was recently named vice chair of the Water Quality & Wetlands Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources. Ms. Gotthelf is past chair of the Michigan State Bar, Environmental Law Section, and a past Section Council person and chair of the Program Committee. She has been active for a number of years on several section committees, including Superfund, Solid and Hazardous Waste and Insurance. She is past chair of the Environmental Law Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association and is a past member of the State Bar Representative Assembly on behalf of Oakland County.

Ms. Gotthelf serves as Chair of the City of Birmingham (Michigan) Brownfield Authority. She is also Chair of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce Task Force on Water and Sewer Issues and a member of the Chamber's Transportation Business Leadership Committee. Ms. Gotthelf is general counsel to the Michigan Association of Metal Finishers and past general counsel to the Wayne County Brownfield Authority. Ms. Gotthelf was on the Federal Advisory Committee charged with recommending stormwater rules and served as a Director of the Detroit Area Commercial Board of Realtors, which covers the State of Michigan. She serves as an arbitrator for the National Arbitration Forum. Ms. Gotthelf is a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar and Oakland County Foundations.

Ms. Gotthelf is very active in the community. She is immediate past president of the Board of Trustees for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter; Board of Directors for the University Cancer Foundation; Trustee of the Jewish Vocational Services; member of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, State Government Relations Oversight Committee; the Seymour Gill Financial Women's Advisory Board; serves on the board of Sister to Sister; and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Oakland Plus Foundation.

Ms. Gotthelf is listed as a Michigan Super Lawyer and has received a number of awards and special recognitions. In 2003, she was named as an emerging leader by the Detroit Regional Chamber. She was recognized by the National Association of Metal Finishers in 2002 for her work on an initiative to streamline environmental rules on behalf of the metal finishers. Corp! magazine named her as one of "Michigan's 95 Most Powerful Women" in 2002. In 1999, she was named as one of Corp! magazine's Top 10 Business Attorneys for Southeast Michigan; and in 1994 she was recognized as one of Crain's Detroit Business' 40 emerging leaders under age 40 (40 Under 40).

Ms. Gotthelf writes and lectures extensively. Recently she authored articles of national interest for the ABA on Proposed Wastewater Regulations and Underground Storage Tanks, and authored a public policy update on the Detroit wastewater ordinance amendments for Detroiter magazine online edition. Some of her national lectures include speaking at COATING 2005 on "Doing Business in China"; the ABA Annual Meetings, Section of Natural Resources, Energy and Environmental Law concerning water issues (2004 and 2002); "A Civil Reaction: Confronting Environment Problems in the New Millennium" (1997); "Annual Fundamentals of Real Estate Taxation" (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001 and 2002); and at the National Association of Metal Finishers, "Federal Wastewater Pretreatment Issues.

Susan C. Rodgers Elected to the Board of Managers of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP

Hiles and Belcher Present at Fifth Annual Hospitality Law Conference
Blackwell Sanders attorneys Brad Hiles and Megan Belcher recently presented at the Fifth Annual Hospitality Law Conference in Houston, Texas, which hosted over 300 attendees and featured seminars in the areas of Lodging, Food & Beverage, Human Resources, and Loss Prevention and Risk Management. According to HospitalityLawyer.com, this was the most successful Hospitality Law Conference to date.

Hiles and Belcher presented on the special human resource issues that food and beverage operators face, including wage and hour issues, improper use of blogging by the employee, and workplace harassment.

The two-day Conference received outstanding reviews from attendees, who took advantage of the opportunity to hear from leading industry professionals and to stay current on pressing issues in liability, legislation, immigration and employment.The Conference focused on the specialized legal, safety, and security needs of the hospitality industry. Attendees included in-house counsel for hotels and restaurants, loss prevention industry leaders, attorneys, and educators. The Conference once again gathered an international attendance, with attendees from Australia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Harvey R. Miller Returns to Weil Gotshal
Harvey R. Miller, the former head of Weil, Gotshal & Manges’ Business Finance & Restructuring Department, will be rejoining the firm effective March 12, 2007. Mr. Miller returns to the firm after more than four years at the merchant banking firm Greenhill & Co. LLP where he was a Managing Director and also served as Vice-Chairman. During his 32-year tenure at Weil Gotshal, Mr. Miller was an integral figure in the firm’s rise to prominence in the bankruptcy and restructuring area, building a department whose size and roster of clients are still unrivaled among major law firms.

In addition to his law firm and investment banking work, Mr. Miller is an Adjunct Professor of law at New York University Law School and a Lecturer in Law at Columbia University School of Law, from which he graduated. He also has served as a Visiting Lecturer at Yale Law School and has authored and co-authored several highly regarded texts and publications in the restructuring field.
