Joel D. Bertocchi Honored by Black Women Lawyers' Association
Joel D. Bertocchi, partner with the national law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, will receive the Helping Hand Award from the Black Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater Chicago (BWLA). The presentation will take place at the BWLA’s Diversity Luncheon on March 9, 2007, in Chicago, Illinois.

Mr. Bertocchi is being honored for helping the BWLA prepare and submit amicus briefs in Gratz v.Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger, which were decided by the United States Supreme Court in 2003, and in Parents Involved in Community Schools v. Seattle School Districts, No. 1 and McFarland v. Jefferson County Public Schools, which are currently pending before the high court. Gratz and Grutterboth concerned racial preference practices in public university admission procedures; Parents Involved and McFarland concern racial preference practices in public elementary and secondary school assignments.

The BWLA sought Mr. Bertocchi’s help based on his experience filing briefs before the Supreme Court, which has strict rules regarding the forms of briefs submitted to it. In thanking Mr. Bertocchi for his generous support, Nathalina A. Hudson, President of the BWLA, said, “It was imperative that BWLA file amicus briefs in these cases because our nation’s greatest strength is the diverse talent and background of our people, and the nation benefits most when we come together across lines of difference in pursuit of the American dream.”

Before joining Hinshaw in October 2006, Mr. Bertocchi was a partner at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP. It was while with that firm that he provided his assistance to the BWLA. Mr. Bertocchi has also served as Solicitor General of the State of Illinois, Assistant United States Attorney in the Criminal Division of the United States Attorney’s Office in Chicago, and Staff Attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Mr. Bertocchi has previously received the “Supreme Court Best Brief Award” from the National Association of Attorneys General, as well as the U.S. Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance.

An experienced appellate and criminal practitioner, Mr. Bertocchi focuses his practice on briefing and arguing civil and criminal appeals and critical and/or complex motions in state and federal appellate and trial courts. He also provides strategic counseling on issues such as application of the RICO statutes and other complex regulatory and statutory issues. In addition, Mr. Bertocchi represents individuals and entities in connection with criminal investigations.

Mr. Bertocchi earned his J.D., cum laude, and his B.A., with honors, from the Universityof Wisconsin. He is actively involved in a variety of professional organizations and has taught appellate practice for the U.S. Department of Justice and the National District Attorneys’ Association.

Baker & Daniels Named on "Best Places to Work"
Baker & Daniels LLP is among the 50 Hoosier companies that the Indiana Chamber of Commerce identified as 2007 "Best Places to Work in Indiana."

Baker & Daniels was the only law firm employer listed among the large-sized companies. The Chamber program honors businesses that create a productive environment in which employees feel valued. Honorees were chosen through employer reports and comprehensive employee surveys. Winners were selected from two categories: small to medium-sized companies of between 25 and 249 employees and large-sized companies consisting of 250 or more employees.

"The Best Places to Work in Indiana program has two missions: to honor those exemplary employers and to encourage other Hoosier businesses to evaluate their workplace environment to see how it affects their employees,” Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar said. “Common sense tells us that an employee who feels valued will likely be a more dependable, productive worker, and therefore have a positive impact on the company’s bottom line."

All companies that participated in the "Best Places to Work" program receive an in-depth evaluation identifying strengths and weaknesses according to their employees. In turn, this report can be used in developing or enhancing employee retention and recruitment programs. The Best Companies Group, which conducts similar programs in 18 other states, produced the list with ModernThink LLC, a workplace excellence consulting firm who handled the selection process.
