Michael T. Cappel Joins Keating Muething & Klekamp
Michael T. Cappel has joined Keating Muething & Klekamp (KMK) as an associate in the litigation practice group.

Mr. Cappel’s practice is concentrated in the area of litigation, with a focus on commercial litigation and appellate practice. Prior to joining KMK, Mr. Cappel served as a law clerk to the Honorable Mark P. Painter, Ohio First District Court of Appeals. In that capacity, Mr. Cappel researched and drafted decisions and opinions for the court in both civil and criminal matters. While in law school, Mr. Cappel was a fellow with the Lois & Richard Rosenthal Institute for Justice/Ohio Innocence Project and externed with the Honorable David L. Bunning in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Kentucky. He also served on the editorial board for the University of Cincinnati Law Review. He received his J.D. from The University of Cincinnati College of Law (2005) and his B.A. from St. Louis University, magna cum laude (2002).

New Partner Joins Bryan Cave LLP in Phoenix
Jay Zweig has joined the international law firm Bryan Cave LLP as a partner in its Phoenix office. Zweig will head the office’s Labor and Employment group, a practice which consists of more than 80 lawyers firmwide.

“Jay’s experience and expertise will help us further strengthen and grow our labor and employment practice in Phoenix,” said Lawrence Scarborough, managing partner of the office. “The ability to draw on the firm’s depth of capacity and international platform will also provide him with additional resources to serve his clients and effectively represent employers.”

Zweig has two decades of experience representing employers in matters related to human resources training, preventing and defending lawsuits and administrative actions regarding contracts, sexual harassment, discrimination, wage and hour law and OSHA and ADA issues. Additionally, Zweig has been the lead counsel on numerous trials for companies ranging from start-up ventures to Fortune 100 companies.

Former president of the Maricopa County Bar Association, Zweig regularly lectures both locally and nationally on employment law before professional and trade organizations. He has been recognized as “Best of the Bar” in employment litigation.

Zweig received his J.D. in 1986 from the University of Texas Law School and his B.S. in 1983 from Northwestern University.

Emmons Named Partner in Charge of Middle East Offices for Baker Botts
David Emmons, who has extensive corporate experience representing clients in energy services, technology and outsourcing, has been named Partner in Charge of the Middle East offices in Dubai, UAE and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for Baker Botts L.L.P. He will be based in Dubai.

Emmons is now the fourth partner in Dubai for Baker Botts. His arrival caps a six-month growth period for the firm in that region. Earlier this year, Sean Korney and Nigel Thompson joined Baker Botts as partners in the firm’s office in Dubai. Steven Matthews guided the firm’s Middle East efforts prior to Emmons’ arrival last month. Matthews will remain in Dubai and continue his corporate and banking practice.

Emmons concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, capital raising transactions and joint ventures. He also has broad expertise in matters of corporate strategy and governance, compliance with securities laws and executive compensation issues. He has extensive experience in advising energy service companies in many areas, including strategic acquisitions and divestitures, capital raising transactions, including initial public offerings, shipyard construction projects and strategic joint ventures.

“David has a sophisticated and varied corporate practice focused on energy and finance matters,” said Walt Smith, Managing Partner of Baker Botts. “This fits with the strategic plan for our Middle East offices, where our clients are experiencing increased activity in those key practice areas.”

The Baker Botts Dubai office provides service to the energy industry, including ongoing work involving oil and gas exploration and production, LNG, pipeline, gas to liquids, petrochemical, refinery and electric power projects in the Gulf region. In addition to focusing on energy projects, the firm has expanded its corporate, banking, finance, telecommunications, construction and dispute resolution work for clients throughout the Middle East.

Emmons said he looks forward to the challenge of continuing to build on Baker Botts’ successes in the Middle East.

Gary L. Gilbert, Leading Music Industry Attorney, Joins Manatt
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, the national law and consulting firm, announced today that Gary L. Gilbert has joined the firm as a partner in the Entertainment Practice Group. Mr. Gilbert is former senior vice president of Capitol Records and is well known in the music industry for negotiating record, performance, publishing, and touring deals for top artists. He makes the move to Manatt from Baker Hostetler along with two associates on his team. Mr. Gilbert's prestigious music and entertainment practice will enhance Manatt's already strong position as a leading entertainment firm. He will also work closely with the Advertising, Marketing & Media Division. The addition of Mr. Gilbert is another important step in Manatt's strategic initiative to broaden the national scope of its entertainment and media transactional work and establish itself as the premier law firm to represent talent and business in the rapidly changing entertainment and media industries.

As senior vice president for Capitol Records, Mr. Gilbert supervised the company's legal and business affairs division. Mr. Gilbert was a partner at the entertainment boutique law firm Bloom Dekom & Hergot. He was a name partner at Mason & Gilbert for ten years. Mr. Gilbert received his J.D. from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1971 and his B.A. from University of Southern California in 1968.

Stephen Butler and Russell Lefferts join Mr. Gilbert in the move to Manatt. Both associates have a long working relationship with Mr. Gilbert specializing in entertainment law. Mr. Butler focuses his practice on the music industry and handles a variety of transactions. He received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1997 and B.A. from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1991. Mr. Lefferts concentrates his practice on intellectual property and transactions involving the music industry. He has previous experience in the legal departments at Universal Records and Motown Records. Mr. Lefferts received his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1993 and B.A. from Tufts University in 1990.

Dreyfus also represents investors in private and public companies, as well as underwriters in public offerings of debt and equity.

Before joining Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, Dreyfus had been a partner at O'Melveny & Myers, where she was a founding partner of its Menlo Park office. During her tenure, she also served as managing partner of the Menlo Park office and as a member of several firm-wide leadership committees, including the executive committee. Earlier in her career, Dreyfus had been an associate at Cooley Godward in San Francisco and Southern California. She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, in 1987, and received a B.A. in government from Cornell University in 1982.

Dreyfus will be based in the firm's Palo Alto office.

Inajo Chappell has been appointed to the Board of Voting Machine Examiners.
Ulmer & Berne LLP announced today that one of its partners, Inajo Davis Chappell, has been appointed by Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner as one of three election officials to the Board of Voting Machine Examiners. Under state law, board members serve during the secretary of state’s term and are responsible for examining voting systems to ensure they meet all legal criteria. In addition, board members will make recommendations to the secretary of state on which voting systems should be certified and decertified for use.

Ms. Chappell chairs the firm’s Nonprofit Group. She represents for-profit businesses as well as public institutions and nonprofit entities. Her legal expertise focuses on various aspects of corporate law, general business and real estate development, construction, financing and contracts. Ms. Chappell has served as bond and company counsel to a variety of government and corporate clients. She has particular expertise representing school districts in the provision of educational programming and services to disabled students. An active civic and community volunteer, she serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. In April, Ms. Chappell was appointed to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.
