VIRGINIA LAW FIRM AND SPILMAN COMBINING LAW FIRMS
The law firms of Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC, and Melchionna, Day, Ammar & Black, PC, have announced they will combine their practices effective July 1, 2007. The combined practice will continue as Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC.

The combined practice will continue as Spilman Thomas & Battle, PLLC. Spilman Thomas & Battle is a full-service law firm with 102 attorneys. Founded in 1864, Spilman has offices in Charleston, Morgantown and Wheeling, West Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Melchionna, Day, Ammar & Black is a law firm with 7 attorneys based in Roanoke, Virginia. For more than 25 years, the firm has concentrated in the areas of tax law, estate planning, creditor’s rights, business litigation, commercial loans and public finance. Roanoke shareholders Olin R. Melchionna, Jr., F. B. Webster Day, N. A. “Nick” Ammar, Jr., and Paul M. Black will join the Spilman firm as members, and all associates and staff will join the Spilman firm as well.

Commenting on the affiliation, Michael J. Basile, Managing Member of Spilman, stated, “We are very excited about the opportunity to join with the outstanding lawyers of Melchionna, Day, Ammar and Black. They are superb individuals and highly-accomplished attorneys, and the combination of our practices will provide significant advantages to both firms. The personnel of both firms mesh well professionally and personally, which is important to both of us.”

Spilman represents numerous clients in its West Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania offices who also have business interests or litigation matters in Virginia. Similarly, Melchionna, Day has clients with expanding legal needs in Virginia and surrounding states, and the two firms have worked together on several matters over recent years. According to Basile, “We looked at the work we were doing together, and it was obvious to both of us that a more permanent arrangement would be a natural fit. There are great synergies between the practices of our two firms.

The combination should allow both groups of attorneys to better serve our collective clients. With Spilman offices currently in West Virginia, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, the addition of an outstanding office of Virginia attorneys creates geographic continuity and greatly enhances our strategic vision for serving the legal needs of the Mid- Atlantic region.” The combination will provide clients of Melchionna, Day with access to additional legal practice areas and the depth provided by a full- service law firm of more than 100 attorneys. Olin Melchionna, the senior member of the Roanoke firm, stated, “With Spilman’s resources, we can provide our clients with access to a wider range of legal fields, as well as the resources and staffing to help in the larger matters of our clients.”

In addition to serving the legal needs of their clients, attorneys in both firms share a strong sense of commitment to their communities and pub lic service. Said Basile, “In considering new lawyers for our Firm, an essential part of the analysis is the character of the attorneys. In our discussions with the Melchionna, Day lawyers, we know them as people of the highest integrity and character as well as outstanding lawyers in their fields. We are extremely excited at the prospect of integrating our practices.”
