John Yates Joins TechBridge Board of Directors
John C. Yates, Chair of the Technology Group of Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP, has joined the TechBridge Board of Directors for a three-year term. TechBridge is a nonprofit organization that helps other nonprofits leverage technology to better serve the community.

“We would like to thank John for agreeing to invest his time, energy and resources to help TechBridge further its mission of helping the thousands of nonprofits in Metro Atlanta better serve our community through the effective use of technology,” said TechBridge co-founder Scott Geller, who is also CEO of Invistics.

An affiliate of the national NPower Network, TechBridge has facilitated the donation of more than $2 million in free Microsoft software. Since its inception in 2000, the organization has saved Georgia nonprofits more than $1 million in technology-related consulting fees.

“I’m honored to be on TechBridge’s Board,” said Yates. “The organization does vital work for nonprofits, including helping with mission-critical initiatives, improving communications with funders and donors and increasing operating efficiencies.”

It would be natural that Yates would be attracted to an organization that helps others through technology. He is one of the pioneers of the technology law field and has been practicing exclusively in this area for more than two decades.

Morris, Manning & Martin’s technology group has represented hundreds of technology companies and provided legal services in such areas as IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, patent prosecution, Internet law, ecommerce/distribution, corporate finance and venture capital, international law and dispute resolution.

Yates’ other community service efforts include co-chairing the Advisory Board of the Cole Society of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. He is also active with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, where he serves on the Executive Committee, chairs the Technology Marketing Council and is immediate past Chair of the Political Action Committee (MACPAC). He has also served as President of the Technology Executives Roundtable, and chaired the 2003 Georgia Technology Celebration. He also sits on several boards, including the Technology Association of Georgia, the Advisory Board of the Winship Cancer Research Institute, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Community Board.

DAVID A. HAYDEN BRINGS 30 YEARS’ EXPERIENCE TO SQUIRE SANDERS’ CHINA PRACTICE
Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. recently named David A. Hayden, a lawyer with more than 30 years of experience in Asia, as counsel. Now vice chair of California-based InterBusiness Bank, N.A., Hayden will draw on his overall experience in Asia, including 12 years in China, to help guide the firm’s growing China practice.

"Few US firms have Squire Sanders' depth in Asia, where the firm has ties going back to the 1950s, and none has a resource such as David Hayden," said Ken M. Kurosu, who coordinates the firm's Asia practice.

"David has spent three decades forging a strong network of legal and business contacts in China, Japan and the United States. Fluent in Chinese and Japanese and well-versed in Asia generally, he is an extraordinarily talented strategic thinker in terms of international economic development who will help the firm create new opportunities for clients in China, Japan, South America, Europe and the United States," Kurosu said.

Hayden is based in the firm’s Los Angeles office, which represents several significant China-based companies and organizations.

“Southern California is a target for China-based investment. As China’s economy expands and its trade with the US grows, we believe Southern California will continue to attract inbound investment from China. David will be invaluable in helping clients in China that want to increase their investment in the region,” said James H. (Jake) Broderick Jr., managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office.

Hayden’s work in Asia began in 1963, when he spent a year in Hong Kong researching legal developments in mainland China. In 1964, he joined the Tokyo office of Graham, James & Rolph, where he specialized in representing Japan-based clients during Japan’s growth into an economic powerhouse.

His career later brought him back to China, where he made legal history. Hayden, in 1978, represented a developer of the first foreign joint venture hotel in China. In 1980, he opened a Beijing office for Graham & James (now Squire Sanders), making it one of the first non-China-based law firms permitted to operate in China. He stopped practicing law in 1993 to consult with China-based companies with joint venture interests in the United States and non-China-based companies doing business in China. For the past five years, he has served as a director and vice chair of InterBusiness Bank, a community bank supporting Southern California’s Asian and Hispanic business communities.

“Squire Sanders, through its combinations with firms focusing on Asia, Europe and Latin America, has developed one of the broadest geographic platforms of any US law firm,” Hayden said. “I am excited by the opportunity to continue developing the firm’s enviable global network.
