Edwardsville

Firm Culture:  A culture of death and deceit. Death to your career, your dreams/goals, your marriage, and anything else that gets in the way of this firm’s gulag business model. The deceit would be all the leis and horse**** the partners shovel to keep you around. Your only value is your billable hours. Thank God every day you leave the office.
Work & Hours:  Young associates are “pigeon-holed.” Associates become mules on grist mills, expected to produce high billables without hope for ANY diversity of practice, mentoring or advancement.
Salary & Benefits:  Salary is very low for the devastation this firm and its partners will bring to an associate’s career. Salary is average to low for the typical St. Louis Metro sweat-shop type firm. Benefits are the minimum they can get away with.
The Interview process:  Easy. About as easy as stepping on a landmine or opening a spring-gun door. Too easy. Even easier if you are a busty attractive young female grad. The all male & over 50 equity partners have obvious preferences. Summer associates are 90% female, slim (yet curvy), and very bright. One really hopes that they figure things out and go somewhere else after law school. Thankfully most don’t return.
Overall Impression:  Run like hell and never look back. Young associates can expect to become old associates at this firm. No mentoring, little marketable experience, no hope. The St. Louis Business Journal doesn’t lie. According to its 2006 review of the St. Louis region’s largest firms, “Hepler Broom” ranked #7 in size with 94 attorneys: 17 partners and 78 associates, yes 17 pyramid-scheming career destroying partners and 78 blood drained and miserable associates. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. The fun really starts once an associate figures it all out and attempts to salvage his/her career by leaving for another firm. Hepler Broom, being the quality counselors that they are, routinely assert conflicts of interest against young associates who dare to leave. It is unbelievable, but as a part of their “business model” they routinely assert conflicts against associates going to other defense firms. Sometimes the threat itself is enough to make another firm blink. Leave the firm and they will try to put you on the street. Its one of the ways they keep the other slaves chained to the oars. I encourage anyone to contact a former associate, PLEASE. Tort reform groups call Madison County, IL a judicial “hellhole”, but the real Madison County “hellhole” is next door at Burroughs, Hepler, Broom, MacDonald, Hebrank and True. May God have mercy on your soul if you have been, will be, or are an associate at this hellish nightmare of a lawfirm.
