Firm Culture:  The firm was started by disgruntled partners (Dan Fears and Jim Payne) who left Paul Hastings back in the 90s. The establishment of P&F in OC promised greener pastures and a departure from the bureaucratic and cut-throat psyche of Big Law. Unfortunately, growth to three offices (Vegas, LA and SF) and bigger clients has got to Jim's and Dan's heads. Recent times have seen the firm turn into a sweat-shop, where the only important factor is lining partner's pockets.
Work & Hours:  The firm's managing partner is LDS. This explains the lack of fun-filled activities and "happy-hours" that are experienced by associates at other similarly sized firms. There is minimal interaction out of the office. Associates have also expressed discontent with the recruiting strategy, which sorely lacks diversity in gender and race. The partner in charge of recruiting favors Mormon candidates. He masks this bias by recruiting Mormons from top tier law schools, although there have been a few hires from BYU law.
Salary & Benefits:  A good thing for a new associate here is that salary is comparable to Big Law. However, 4/5th years at Big Law make much more than their counterpart at P&F.
The Interview process:  See comments about mormon recruiting practices above. Look at the website, except for Willie, how many women or minority lawyers do you see? Does this mean there are not enough qualified women and/or minority applicants? mmm.
Overall Impression:  The firm is really a depressing environment, coupled with long hours and boring work. The Employment law group here has juicy contracts with Boeing and HOme Depot that form a substantive part of this practice. The Insurance group is led by Scott Thomas and super-brain Kelby Van Patten. Business Litigation is headed by Nix and Rasmussen and predominantly involves litigation between local OC companies and organizations.
The only good thing about this firm is the attorneys are extremely competent, and they abide by a high level of ethics. However, for young associates - take it from an insider - there are WAY better places to earn your craft. Don't get stuck in this quagmire!!!!
