Washington

Overall Review:  Jones Day has the most unusually located offices of any firm in the city, just northwest of the Capitol in the historic Acacia Insurance Building, nestled in the row of labor union headquarters on Louisiana Avenue. With fifteen foot ceilings, views reminiscent of Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and a lobby that looks "how a big DC firm ought to look," Jones Day DC is Truly Impressive.

Unfortunately, the ambience of the place - which can really go to one's head - is destroyed by a hideous Leroy Nieman wall mural depicting President Kennedy. I mean, who is this guy, anyway? why is he hanging around the lobby? what message is the firm trying to send by showing him off in garish yellow and pink?

Unfortunately for Jones Day, the Nieman painting together with the lovely way that this site lumps together all statistics without any sort of weighting, means that what I think of as a "Terrific" firm in most respects comes out scoring something like a 5.37. Perhaps the powers that be will get this message and take down the Kennedy, thus allowing the firm to rise to the ranking it rightfully deserves.

Dallas

Overall Review:  It is true, this firm is a total sweat shop. Jones Day Nights and Weekends (add holidays too!! 4th July, and an 80 hour billable week the week of Christmas). They say they require 2000 hours, but I billed well over 2500 last year. Partners pile on the work and expect you to have it done on completely unreasonable deadlines. NO BONUS either. Pay Suck for how many hours you are required to work.

Firm Culture:  Good
Work & Hours:  Very Good
Salary & Benefits:  Good
The Interview process:  easy
Overall Impression:  Good

Dallas

Firm Culture:  Elitist
Work & Hours:  Official requirement is 2000 hours per year, but the real requirement is at around 2400.
Salary & Benefits:  They don't pay enough for the hours worked or the amount of political crap associates have to put up with.
The Interview process:  Superficial.
Overall Impression:  If you are interested in actually advancing your career, doing interesting work, being mentored and being praised for your work, Jones Day is not the place for you. The firm lures law students with their impressive offices, seemingly endless resources, prestige (arguably undeserved) and a fun summer clerkship, but after the first year all pretenses are discarded. The firm does not care about the development of its associates. They require that you work endlessly for them, make sacrifices in your personal and family life, and sacrifice the progress or your career for absolutely no recognition in the end. They have no system for assigning work and most of the valueable assignments go to the associates who are preferred because they play better politics -- everyone else is edged out. The firm also has no system for tracking whether their associates are adequately developing their skill sets--and they really don't care if you are. Typically, 5th and 6th year associates are still working on document reviews at Jones Day. If you want to work at a prestigious firm because you went to a prestigious law school (and have the student loan debt to show for it), do not go to a firm like Jones Day that does not appreciate your ability and intellect.

Atlanta

Firm Culture:  The diversity requirement has been filled.
Work & Hours:  This office is similar to the other Jones Day offices written about on the page. You trade in your life and your friends and family for a career where you are rarely appreciated for the slave-like hours you put in to your job. If your career as a lawyer is your only priority, this is the place for you. You have to bill the same amount of hours on holiday weeks as those without holidays. They entice you as a law student by telling you that they want you to live a well-rounded life and become the best attorney you can be, but what they really mean is that an attorney is all you will be. The partners pass down work without regard for those beneath them or your development as a lawyer or outside of the firm. Billable hours are their one and only concern. You will become great at your job but at the sacrifice of having friends and family.
Salary & Benefits:  They have Competitive pay, but you will never make enough money for the hours you must put in.
The Interview process:  Interview process is rather typical for a large law firm.
Overall Impression:  Before you take a position at Jones Day consider whether you mind working to the exclusion of everything else in your life.
