Norfolk 

Overall Review:  Richmond is certainly below radar, and that is a difficulty H&W has in recruiting people to come here over larger cities. However, it is the home office and, at least in the corporate group, is where the action is. For being in a smaller town there is a surprising national practice in securities and M&A. My only comparison is having worked in big law in Atlanta for 3 years. The firm has not jumped on the salary increase bandwagon yet, but this seems inevitable and likely will happen at the end of its fiscal year (3/31).

Most young law grads want to be in the bigger cities (I don't blame them. See prior reference to Atlanta). When it comes time to examine cost of living, where you might want to raise a family and present/future benefits (H&W is equity at 7 1/2 years), this firm's Richmond office might be worth a look.

However, like anywhere, it's still a law firm.


New York City 

Firm Culture:  Stuffy, southern culture. Everything is dictated by the Richmond office since the majority of the partners are located in Richmond.
Work & Hours:  Work assignments are ok - more stress on billing than on quality work.
Salary & Benefits:  They claim to pay market salaries, but not quite.
The Interview process:  Standard.
Overall Impression:  Nice people, poor management.
