The most recent Institutional Investor Forum, sponsored by BLB&G, took place in New York City on October 5 & 6, 2006. The twelfth in the series of educational conferences designed for executive directors, trustees, and counsel from public pension systems and other institutional investors, the Forum shared the insights and experiences of the most significant regulators, scholars, attorneys and figures in the fields of institutional investing, corporate governance and securities litigation.

Among other topics, this year’s Forum, entitled “Recovering Investor Assets: How Institutional Investors Can Fight Back Against Securities Fraud,” featured programs designed to:

educate public pension funds and other institutional investors in ways to recover significant losses on their portfolios caused by securities law violations;
minimize the fees and costs paid by institutions for services and products;
inform attendees of the root causes of frauds like WorldCom, HealthSouth and Refco, the inherent conflicts of interest on Wall Street...and much more.

As in years past, this year’s Forum featured presentations by esteemed outside speakers including Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood; and Herb Greenberg, Senior Columnist for Dow Jones’ MarketWatch.

BLB&G Partner Alan Schulman served as a panelist at the “10th Annual National Institute on Class Actions,” a program sponsored by the American Bar Association ("ABA"), which was held in San Diego, California.

In the panel entitled, “If You Build It, They Will Come: Crafting Creative, Coupon-Free Settlements,” Mr. Schulman drew from over 20 years of complex litigation experience to discuss the important role of mediation in creating solutions for complex settlements and how these complex remedies affect settlement administration and the "desire to inform" due process requirement for notice.

Mr. Schulman was named one of the “Top 30 Securities Litigators in California” by the Daily Journal in 2005 and is responsible for a $960 million partial settlement in In re McKesson Securities Litigation, the largest securities class action recovery ever achieved in the Ninth Circuit.
