Stephen D. Wilson, a partner in the Dallas office of Locke Liddell & Sapp, has been selected as a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum – recognized as one of the most prestigious group of trial lawyers in the United States.

Membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum is limited to attorneys who have won million and multi-million dollar verdicts, awards and settlements. The organization was founded in 1993 and has about 3,000 members.

Wilson’s practice focuses on litigation, intellectual property and entertainment law. He has experience resolving disputes and counseling clients in antitrust, arbitration, business torts, civil rights, class actions, construction law, consumer protection, contracts, copyrights, defamation, divorce, false advertising, fraud, insurance, interstate shipping, mediation, oil and gas law, partnership and fiduciary issues, patents, personal injury, tortious interference, trademarks, and trade secrets. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Wilson also received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Southern California.

Established in 1891, Locke Liddell & Sapp LLP is recognized as one of the leading law firms in Texas and throughout the nation. A full service law firm with offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., Locke Liddell & Sapp has approximately 400 lawyers who represent a broad range of businesses and individual clients having extensive domestic and foreign business interests.

Locke Liddell & Sapp, which has offices in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New Orleans and Washington, D.C., raised its base salary scale for Texas associates to the level announced last week by Baker Botts.

The new, higher base salary scale at Locke Liddell is retroactive to March 1 and applies to associates in all five of the firm's offices, says Mike Rutledge, the firm's Houston-based administrative partner. The firm's management committee, which approved the new base salary levels on Tuesday, is still working on determining the bonuses that go with the new base salaries, Rutledge says.

The 131 associates at 361-lawyer Locke Liddell received news of the raises on Wednesday.

The new annual base salary for a first-year associate at Locke Liddell is $140,000, Rutledge says. A second-year associate will earn a $145,000 base. The base salary is $150,000 for a third-year associate; $160,000 for a fourth-year associate; $170,000 for a fifth-year associate; $180,000 for a sixth-year associate; $185,000 for a seventh-year associate; and $190,000 for an eighth-year associate, he says.

While Locke Liddell is still ironing out its associate bonus structure, Baker Botts' new scale calls for maximum bonuses ranging from $10,000 to $50,000, depending on how long an associate has been with the firm.

Rutledge says firms have to be competitive in salary to vie for the best associates.

""You have to maintain a level that's comparable with the other firms, where the market is,"" he says.

While Los Angeles-based firms started the associate salary wars last fall, the big-firm Texas market didn't jump into the fray until earlier this month, when Vinson & Elkins announced a new, higher Texas salary scale, retroactive to March 1. Hours after V&E announced its raises on March 8, Andrews Kurth, another large Texas firm, notified its Texas associates that it would raise salaries, retroactive to Jan. 1.
