James V. DeLong was named as special counsel and chairman of the Intellectual Property practice area in the Washington, D.C. law office of Kamlet Shepherd & Reichert the firm announced.

DeLong will expand the firm’s intellectual property rights capabilities, focusing on counseling in patent and copyright matters, and on the intersection between antitrust and intellectual property laws. He also brings a depth of expertise on both U. S. and international regulatory issues.

“We are extraordinarily pleased to have Jim DeLong join our group, and we will rely on his demonstrated expertise on patents, copyright and software licensing to expertly serve our clients,” Gifford said. “His expertise on intellectual property and antitrust will complement and expand our ability to serve our clients and to attract new clients.”

Kamlet Shepherd’s Communications, Internet and Intellectual Property practice group encompasses global issues relating to intellectual property enforcement, as well as local, state and federal competition policy and regulatory issues.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for me to partner and expand Kamlet Shepherd’s capabilities in the area of intellectual property, and stay on top of global issues of intellectual property and competition policy,” said DeLong.

Prior to coming to Kamlet Shepherd, DeLong served as senior fellow at The Progress & Freedom Foundation where he directed the Center for the Study of Digital Property. Before that, DeLong was senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. He also served as general counsel of the National Legal Center for the Public Interest, research director of the Administrative Conference of the United States and assistant director for special projects in the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC. He is active in regulatory reform, intellectual property, industrial and government management and legal reform, and has appeared as a witness before Congress and state regulatory agencies.

DeLong received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and graduated magna cum laude with a juris doctor degree from the Harvard School of Law.
Kamlet Shepherd, one of the fastest growing law firms in the Rocky Mountain region, focuses on Corporate and Securities; Real Estate and Project Finance; Environmental and Natural Resources; Communications, Internet and Intellectual Property; and Commercial Litigation and White Collar Criminal Defense.

Kamlet Shepherd is a comprehensive legal services firm with more than 40 attorneys that is structured to serve businesses in the Rocky Mountain region. It can be contacted at www.ksrlaw.com. Based in Denver, it was formed in 2000 by partners determined to make customer service and responsiveness a hallmark of the firm. In 2006 it earned the designation Best Place to Work in Denver for medium-sized companies.

Five Kamlet Shepherd & Reichert attorneys were named this month as 2007 Super Lawyers in Colorado by Law & Politics, an award winning magazine based in Washington, D.C. Jay F. Kamlet and Willie E. Shepherd, co-founders; E. Lee Reichert; Fredric M. Winocur; and Stephen D. Gurr, partners, were recognized as top lawyers in Colorado.

More than 13,000 active lawyers in Colorado were balloted. Those lawyers nominated and voted on the state’s best attorneys who “they have personally observed in action.” A blue ribbon panel of lawyers in more than 55 practice areas within the state monitored and participated in the selection process.

Super Lawyers are comprised of the top five percent of attorneys in each state. In addition to the Kamlet Shepherd partners, other top Colorado lawyers who were recognized include prosecutors, in-house counsel and public service lawyers.

Kamlet Shepherd partners have achieved this recognition two years in a row.

“This is a testament to our commitment to hiring highly skilled and experienced lawyers,” said Shepherd, chair of Kamlet Shepherd. “We strongly believe in bringing aboard the very best attorneys with sophisticated knowledge and expertise in our firm’s core practice areas.”

Kamlet heads a practice group focusing on real estate transactions and finance while Shepherd is head of the practice group concentrating on the areas of environmental and natural resources.

As the head of the firm’s litigation group, Gurr’s practice consists of complex commercial litigation.

Reichert is head of the corporate and securities group and is involved with a full range of corporate and commercial law for a wide variety of companies, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to emerging growth companies.

Winocur specializes in the defense of white-collar and economic crimes for both corporate and individual clients. His practice combines white-collar defense and criminal defense, where he has developed a niche practice defending high profile individuals throughout the state. A complete listing of Colorado Super Lawyers appears in a special section in the April 2007 edition of 5280 magazine.
