News Brief Find out if this Firm is Hiring

Overall Review:  Richmond is certainly below radar, and that is a difficulty H&W has in recruiting people to come here over larger cities. However, it is the home office and, at least in the corporate group, is where the action is. For being in a smaller town there is a surprising national practice in securities and M&A. My only comparison is having worked in big law in Atlanta for 3 years. The firm has not jumped on the salary increase bandwagon yet, but this seems inevitable and likely will happen at the end of its fiscal year (3/31).

Most young law grads want to be in the bigger cities (I don't blame them. See prior reference to Atlanta). When it comes time to examine cost of living, where you might want to raise a family and present/future benefits (H&W is equity at 7 1/2 years), this firm's Richmond office might be worth a look.

However, like anywhere, it's still a law firm.

New York City

Firm Culture:  Stuffy, southern culture. Everything is dictated by the Richmond office since the majority of the partners are located in Richmond.
Work & Hours: Work assignments are ok - more stress on billing than on quality work.
Salary & Benefits:  They claim to pay market salaries, but not quite.
The Interview process:  Standard.
Overall Impression:  Nice people, poor management.

"Mr. Peter Hustinx, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), issued an opinion on the European Commission’s Communication on the follow-up of the Work Programme for better implementation of the Data Protection Directive which supported the Commission’s conclusion reached in its Communication that the Directive should not be amended at this time — see our E-Alert issue of May 2007. The EDPS pointed out to a more urgent need to improve its implementation by the Member States. In particular, he emphasized the importance of: (1) full implementation of the Directive; (2) considering the impact of technological developments on the Directive; (3) having a global perspective and further developing rules on international data transfers; (4) ensuring that personal data are protected despite law enforcement demands; (5) adopting more sectoral data protection legislation (for example, regarding RFID); (6) greater use of infringement procedures against the Member States; (7) encouraging the use of interpretative communications by the Commission to clarify important questions; (8) enhancing the use of non-binding instruments to increase compliance, such as privacy seals; and (9) better defining the role of institutional actors, in particular the Article 29 Working Party."

Hunton & Williams today announced that Peter Brudenall has joined the firm as a partner in its Global Technology and Outsourcing practice, based in London. Brudenall joins Hunton & Williams from UK firm Simmons & Simmons.

“We will continue to strengthen the Global Technology and Outsourcing practice in London and elsewhere in Europe as global movement of data and outsourcing is critical to businesses worldwide,” said Martin Thomas, managing partner of Hunton & Williams-London. “Peter is well known in information technology and outsourcing circles in Europe and is a key addition to our office.”

Brudenall will work closely with London-based outsourcing and privacy partner Bridget Treacy who noted: “Hunton & Williams’ key differentiator in this market lies in the coupling of our outsourcing experience with the resources of our global information management team. Few firms have the depth of experience to advise on these issues at a truly international level. Peter will be key to our further expansion.”

“Peter’s extensive experience in India and other critical sourcing destinations adds significant depth and breadth to our menu of services, whether our clients are acquiring or providing services, establishing a captive, or expanding their operations globally,” added James A. Harvey, who coheads the Global Technology and Outsourcing practice for Hunton & Williams. “Peter and Bridget and their London team are a key asset in our mission to be the provider of choice for clients in board level, enterprise-wide initiatives that use and move data and source services around the globe.”

Mr. Brudenall’s clients include leading global outsourcing vendors as well as FTSE 100/Fortune 500 companies and financial institutions. His recent work has included advising on major outsourcing projects in the utilities, retail and financial services sectors. Brudenall is recognised by Chambers 2007 as a leading individual within the outsourcing field. He has published two books: Technology and Offshore Outsourcing Strategies and The Secure On-Line Business Handbook, and is a frequent lecturer and widely published on IT-related outsourcing issues.
