Overall Review:  Laid back doesn't even begin to describe this firm. It's the only place where you have top notch lawyers doing unbelievably complicated and lucrative work, yet also have them walk around the office in jeans and genuinely enjoy each other's company. I don't think I've ever heard a partner's voice raised in anger, even when an associate may have earned rebuke.

It's tough to get a job at this firm, but only because they are ultra-selective about candidates based on both academic achievement and - sometimes even more importantly - "fit" into the personality of the office. There are only 80 attorneys, so they can afford to be picky since they can really scrutinize every up-and-coming candidate for the firm. About the only place where your school matters is for the summer associate experience. This is because they only interview at Chicago, Michigan and Northwestern. There have been summers from other schools, but that normally results from either a connection or an outreach program such as a job fair. Laterals tend to be from a wide swath of schools, but the uniform characteristic is strong performances in school and, more importantly, in their firms afterward.

Pay is comparable to all other big Chicago firms, vacation is about as flexible as you can get (i.e. no strict policy so long as you 're around eventually to help out the partners on their cases). Dress code is non-existent, so you often see people come to work in the summertime in flip flops and shorts. When it's time to meet clients, of course, it's all business, but the firm's philosophy is that lawyers should be comfortable when they are just working alone or together in their offices.

Finally, advancement is a very secure process at BFKPN. The partner-to-associate ratio very nearly approaches 1:1, so that means there is a pretty strong chance of making it into the Sacred Circle. It's a two-tiered partnership process, with junior partnership starting after seven years and equity at year nine.

To say this place is unique is an understatement. I'm not sure where else you can find its mix of casual attitude and stellar career opportunities. It has a couple of main practice areas, the biggest ones being real estate, corporate and litigation, but it also has strong bankruptcy and banking practices. I know this review basically glows, but that is exactly why Barack is so unique. I honestly can't think of any attorneys there who dislike it because of the firm itself. Those who do tend to dislike being a lawyer in general and they usually end up either going in house or on to different careers.

Oh, and we are all good looking, have a stellar golf and tennis game, and can run 20 miles without breaking a sweat. (This last part may be a slight exaggeration.)
