San Francisco

Firm Culture:  Fear-ruled, deceptive, secretive, stiff, smug, delusionally "superior", amateur-managed snakepit. Publicly pretends to care about pro bono (e.g., by bullying local charitable organizations into putting firm partners on their boards) while privately telling associates not to do any if they value their careers.
Work & Hours: Desperately wants the big, high-profile cases and clients but, with the exception of the antitrust group, doesn't have the firepower to get them.
Salary & Benefits:  Like any big firm.
The Interview process:  Deceptive. Numerous associates feel they were sold a bill of goods.
Overall Impression:  The firm is run by a bunch of coddled, self-satisfied, inexperienced liars. Run, don't walk.

Working Mother magazine, the authoritative source for career mothers, and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, a national consulting firm advising attorneys and legal employers on work-life balance and the retention and advancement of women, have named Heller Ehrman LLP a 2007 Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firm for Women. A new initiative from the leading advocates for work-life balance and women-friendly policies, Best Law Firms for Women honors 50 winning firms for their commitment to the retention and advancement of female talent.

“Since its founding, Working Mother magazine has been the champion of progressive, women-friendly changes in the workplace,” said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. “Every year we see substantive advances in companies’ policies across the country, and we are so excited to be able to pair with Flex-Time Lawyers to celebrate change in a field that has historically struggled to support women and their life choices. I commend Heller Ehrman for taking the lead for women lawyers.”

“We are delighted to celebrate Heller Ehrman for its efforts and successes in retaining and promoting women,” said Deborah Epstein Henry, Founder and President of Flex-Time Lawyers LLC. “We hope its standing on the list of Best Law Firms for Women will further inspire Heller Ehrman to use the national benchmarking data now available to it through participation in this initiative to improve the status of women in the profession and raise the bar on what makes a best law firm for women.”

Profiled in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine, Heller Ehrman is honored for creating a work environment that is hospitable to and encouraging of the advancement of women. With innovative programs and policies that help female attorneys achieve balance in their personal and professional lives and thrive as practitioners, Heller Ehrman is ensuring that women are the future of private law practice.

Through its Gender Diversity Committee, Heller Ehrman works toward fostering an enriching, rewarding working environment for women by addressing the career and work-life balance needs of the firm’s attorneys. In 2006, the Committee launched the “Opt-In Project,” a nationwide, cross-industry initiative to explore ways to retain and advance women in the workplace. The Opt-In Project sponsored a series of programs between May 2006 and May 2007 that featured prominent women in different industries across the country. As part of these programs, the participants held roundtable discussions where they were able to share ideas and solutions. The Opt-In Project issued a report that summarized the observations gathered over the year-long study and proposed suggestions for addressing work structure issues that affect the retention and advancement of women in the workplace.

Heller Ehrman was recently named one of America’s Top Companies for Women by PINK magazine and KPMG, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm, in PINK’s August-September issue. Heller Ehrman was the only law firm to make the list.

“Heller Ehrman has developed strategic plans that have a strong focus on the hiring, retention and advancement of women,” says Judith C. We are thrilled to be recognized for our efforts by Working Mother.”

Heller Ehrman LLP has been selected by the State Bar of California as recipient of the 2007 President’s Pro Bono Service Award in the Distinguished Pro Bono Category. The award will be given at a special awards reception during the 2007 State Bar Annual Meeting on September 28.

Established in 1983 by the State Bar Board of Governors, the President’s Pro Bono Service Awards recognize California attorneys who have provided or enabled the direct provision of legal services to poor persons or to organizations whose primary purpose is to provide legal services to the poor without expectation of compensation from the client.

Heller Ehrman was selected to receive the award for its work in the case of Kincaid, et al. v. City of Fresno, a civil rights action brought in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, which opposes the City of Fresno’s practice of conducting “clean-up” practices in areas where homeless people live. The case challenges Fresno's practice of "cleaning up" by destroying property of homeless people who were not present during clean up or were unable to move their belongings. City attorneys claimed the destruction was unavoidable because the homeless "abandoned" their property, leaving it unattended and that health hazards prevented workers from preserving it.

In November 2006, the District Court granted a preliminary injunction, prohibiting the City of Fresno from seizing and immediately destroying property of homeless people, pending a final judgment. The judge found that the city's practices violated the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution, the California Constitution and California statutory law. On July 30, 2007, the Court certified the case as a class action on behalf of all homeless people in Fresno whose property was destroyed by the defendants. A trial of the case is scheduled for May, 2008.

“The result in the Kincaid case raises important constitutional issues regarding the property and rights of homeless people,” says Kit A. Pierson, Chair of Heller Ehrman’s Community Services Committee. “The firm is grateful for the dedication our attorneys and staff have brought to this important matter, and we are honored to be recognized by the California Bar Association for these efforts.”

Since Heller Ehrman's founding in 1890, the firm has been committed to providing legal services to the disadvantaged and communities in need. The firm’s attorneys and staff have consistently been recognized for their pro bono efforts. Recent accolades include the following:

* Ranked No. 11 nationally for pro bono work in 2006, according to The American Lawyer’s annual pro bono survey, which includes data from the nation’s 200 highest-grossing law firms.
* Robert E. Borton, a shareholder in the firm’s San Francisco office was selected as one of three attorneys in the U.S. to receive the 2007 Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association (ABA).
* Selected as one of four law firms in the U.S. to receive the National Law Journal 2006 Pro Bono award for "singular achievement in the areas of human and civil rights".
