Three Cyber Attorneys Return to Lewis Brisbois

Lewis Brisbois Lewis Brisbois is pleased to welcome three talented attorneys back to the firm in its national Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. Sarah Estephan, Vy Nguyen (CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM), and Maverick James have rejoined the firm’s Orange County, Houston, and New York offices, respectively. During their previous tenure with Lewis Brisbois’ New York office, Ms. Nguyen and Mr. James worked together closely on many matters. They will continue to do so now that they have returned, this time working across state lines to achieve clients’ objectives throughout the country.

Sarah Estephan (Orange County)

Ms. Estephan returns after a four-month stint at Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete. She focuses her practice on assisting clients with creating data privacy and cybersecurity policies and procedures, as well as with implementing corporate compliance and privacy programs. In addition, Ms. Estephan regularly provides fully managed incident response services to clients of all sizes and in all sectors, including facilitation of digital forensic investigations and determinations regarding legal breach notification obligations. She recently completed an At-Bay secondment and therefore is uniquely positioned to manage the needs of firm clients and the clients’ insurance carriers.

Orange County Partner and Co-Chair of Lewis Brisbois’ Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice Kamran Salour noted, “When I returned to Lewis Brisbois, I knew who to call first – Sarah. I asked, ‘Sarah, would you like to re-join Lewis Brisbois and help build something new?’ She said, ‘Name the time and the place. I’ll be there yesterday.’ I’m so fortunate that she answered that call.”

Ms. Estephan earned her law degree from the University of San Francisco (USF) School of Law, where she served as a staff member of the USF Law Review. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Estephan is admitted to practice in California.

Vy Nguyen (Houston) and Maverick James (New York)

Ms. Nguyen and Mr. James rejoin the firm after nine months with Mullen Coughlin LLC and The Beckage Firm, respectively. They advise clients on compliance with state, federal, and industry-specific privacy and consumer protection laws. They also represent businesses in regulatory investigations and assist them with managing overall privacy postures. Aside from assisting clients in proactively managing data privacy and cybersecurity risks, these attorneys also help clients navigate the aftermath of cyber events by managing the incident response process, which includes assessing obligations under relevant legal and contractual frameworks and fulfilling notification obligations.

Ms. Nguyen brings deep technical knowledge and a multidisciplinary background to holistically advise clients on data risk management and governance, cyber incident preparedness and response, regulatory strategy, and government investigations. Mr. James brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as it relates to data privacy and security. He approaches his counsel with enthusiasm, attention to detail, and an innovative spirit.

Mr. Salour expressed enthusiasm about the arrival of Vy and Maverick, explaining, “I am thrilled that Vy and Maverick decided to return to Lewis Brisbois. I was particularly eager to see them rejoin our team because in our industry, they are considered a dynamic duo. Our intention is to give them a space where they can nurture, develop, and grow their practice as they continue to obtain positive results for our clients - just as they have done in the past.”

Ms. Nguyen earned her law degree from the Seattle University School of Law and the Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. She is admitted to practice in Washington and New York, with admission to the Texas bar pending. In addition, Ms. Nguyen is certified by the International Association of Privacy Professionals as a Certified Information Professional (CIPP) for the U.S. and the EU, and is recognized as a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM). She also holds a professional certificate granted by IBM, recognizing her as a Cybersecurity Analyst.

Mr. James earned his law degree from New York Law School and his undergraduate degree from Hunter College. He is admitted to practice in New York.

These returning lawyers continue Lewis Brisbois' expansion of the firm's data privacy and cybersecurity capabilities across the nation, following the addition of six nationally recognized cyber attorneys in February, including Practice Co-Chair Robert F. Walker, and the return of Orange County Partner Kamran Salour as Practice Co-Chair in April. There are now 13 skilled attorneys in the firm's Data Privacy & Cybersecurity Practice. This number will continue to grow as Lewis Brisbois addresses the cybersecurity needs of its clients.
