Top Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Aide Mark Van De Water Joins Baker Donelson In Washington
Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC (Baker Donelson) is pleased to announce that Senate Appropriations staffer Mark Van de Water has joined the Firm's Washington, DC office.

Mr. Van de Water, who is joining the Firm as a Senior Public Policy Advisor, previously served as principal advisor to Senator Thad Cochran and the members and staff of the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee. In this role, Mr. Van de Water advised the Subcommittee on issues and funding concerning the Transportation Security Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Protection and Programs Directorate, and Science and Technology.

"Baker Donelson has a careful strategy of expanding the firm's public policy practice in Washington through the addition of top government talent," stated Linda H. Daschle, chair of Baker Donelson's Federal Public Policy Group. "Mark Van de Water's appropriations and legislative experience enhances our already robust practice in the homeland security area and strengthens the Firm's overall federal policy group. During his tenure as principal advisor, Van de Water made recommendations to the members of the Homeland Security Subcommittee and full Appropriations Committee on the appropriation of $36 billion in annual federal homeland security funding and programs. For five years, beginning in 1991, Mr. Van de Water worked closely with the Senate Committee on Appropriations as Deputy Staff Director and as Professional Staff. Prior to that, he served as Legislative Assistant for Congressman Les AuCoin from 1986-1991.

Mr. Van de Water also served as Executive Director of the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission, and was Vice President of OPIC's Investment Development Department, where he was instrumental in growing a global portfolio to more than $18 billion in 96 countries. In addition to his Masters in International Development Studies from the George Washington University Elliot School of International Affairs, Van de Water was a Presidential Scholarship recipient as an undergraduate student at St. Lawrence University, a recipient of the John C. Stennis Fellowship and currently has Top Secret Security clearance. Mr. Van de Water is native of Corvallis, Oregon, and a current resident of Fauquier County, Virginia.

Mr. Van de Water's arrival marks the fifth major recent addition to the Baker Donelson Washington, DC office. Earlier this year, former Congresswoman Nancy Johnson (R-CT) joined the Firm. In addition, Lance B. Leggitt,, a former senior White House Advisor joined Baker Donelson, bringing with him a wealth of health policy knowledge as well as Donna Thiel, Esq., who concentrates on regulatory issues affecting health care providers. JC Sandberg, former counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, also joined the Firm this year.

Distinguished Kirkland Lawyer Thomas A. Gottschalk To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award From Leadin
Kirkland & Ellis LLP lawyer Thomas A. Gottschalk will be honored by The American Lawyer magazine as one of the recipients of its fourth annual Lifetime Achievement Awards. Mr. Gottschalk, along with seven other lawyers, as well as the law firms selected for the magazine's 2007 "A-List" ranking, will be the headliners at a gala dinner on Oct. 24, 2007, in New York City.

Mr. Gottschalk returned to Kirkland on April 1, 2007, as of counsel in the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office, from General Motors (NYSE: GM) where he had been for the last 13 years, most recently in the position of executive vice president for law & public policy. In that role, he reported directly to G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., GM's chairman and CEO.

Prior to joining GM, Mr. Gottschalk was at Kirkland for 28 years. As a partner, he engaged in a trial and appellate practice, principally involving complex civil cases, class actions, and federal agency suits in such fields as antitrust, contracts, and product safety. He was also a member of Kirkland’s Firm Management Committee.

In announcing the award, The American Lawyer noted that Mr. Gottschalk "set the in-house standard for promoting diversity and pro bono."

"Over their distinguished careers, these individuals have exemplified the legal profession's twin values of client service and public duty. Though they come from a variety of backgrounds, firms, and locales, they share careers of remarkable distinction and have set outstanding examples for younger members of the profession. King & Spalding Represents Arcapita in Sale of its Truck Specialty Unit
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, represented Arcapita in the private equity fund’s sale of its manufacturing company Transportation Safety Technologies Inc. to Riverside Manufacturing Inc. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Indianapolis-based TST makes custom electronic panels and object detection sensors for the transportation industry. Riverside is a supplier of wire harnesses, LED lighting, panel assembly, cables and switches.

The King & Spalding legal team involved in the TST transaction was led by partner Jon R. (Jay) Harris, Jr., of the firm’s Atlanta office.

Legal 500 Recognizes King & Spalding, 11 Lawyers as Experts for Real Estate Transactions in Georgia
King & Spalding, an international law firm, has been named one of the top Real Estate practices in Georgia in the 2007 edition of Legal 500: US.

King & Spalding was selected as a "tier 1" firm for Real Estate (Georgia - Transactions and Finance), and received a "tier 3" ranking in the Real Estate (Georgia - Land Use and Zoning) category. MACVC Recognizes Hunton & Williams for Volunteer Program
The Metro Atlanta Corporate Volunteer Council, a local organization comprised of corporate volunteer program managers that provides a resource for companies seeking to start or enhance their efforts in employee volunteerism, announced the recipients of its 2007 IMPACT (Involvement Means People Acting Together), recognizing Hunton & Williams with its Emerging Program award.

Hunton & Williams-Atlanta established a program two years ago to promote staff volunteerism through the donation of time, money and goods to community service organizations in the Midtown area. Since September 2005, employees have prepared 1,500 sandwiches for the Crossroads Community Ministries soup kitchen; donated clothing, toiletries, books and toys to Sheltering Arms and the Atlanta Children's Shelter; assembled and donated 105 personal care packages to homeless women and children; collected 288 books to help rebuild a public library in New Orleans; purchased formula, baby food, and diapers for special needs infants at My House; and sent 11 boxes of donations to soldiers in Iraq. A committee of 10 staff members volunteered to organize these and other projects.
