Supreme Court bars Enron suit

The US Supreme Court has declined to keep alive a large investor's suit against major investment bankers. The case stems from the Enron fiasco, and the damages sought was around $40 Billion.

But with last week's Stoneridge ruling appearing to foreclose the suit, the Supreme's made it official today: the Plaintiffs are out of luck, thereby upholding the 5th Circuit.

Supreme's bar Muslim inmate from suing over Koran disappearance

Today, the US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, decided that a Muslim inmate could not sue the government over the disappearance of the inmates' Koran and prayer rug. The case turned on some statutory interpretation, and basically held that under the particular law the inmate relied on, the officials are immune from suit.

AS a note, Justice Breyer in dissent took us through the travails of his butterless refrigerator.

The Supreme Court was asked Tuesday to swiftly consider and rule this Term on a Constitutional challenge to limits on their planned broadcast of ads promoting a movie about Hillary Clinton. Another movie about Barack Obama is allegedly in the works.

This case is unusual in that appeals go directly to the Supreme Court, skipping the Circuit Court stage.

SEC digs up treasure in Treasure Hunting company

The SEC has found it's own peculiar brand of treasure--insider trading-- in the company Odyssey Marine Exploration. Last May, Odyssey found buried treasure off the coast of Spain to the tune of $500 million dollars.

Now, it turns out that one of the consultants who helped find the treasure sort of accidentally and bought up lots of stock--before the find went public. Then, he sort of accidentally sold said stock after it surged.

Canadian prosecutor's drop charges in tainted blood case

Prosecutots in Canada dropped all charges against former Canadian Red Cross medical director Dr. Roger Perrault.

They found there was "no reasonable prospect of conviction in the case."

This case had been brought in relation to the use in the 1980's and 1990's of tainted blood by the Canadian Red Cross. That incident led to more than 20,000 people infected with Hepatitis C and over a thousand people with HIV.

This past year has seen many large Texas firms pay their associates a healthy bonus, roughly equivalent to their work in 2006. Figures range into six figures at some firms for exceptional work. The increases also come as a form of replying to competition at other firms: as one firm raises bonuses, many follow.
