BC Partner Honored with Alexander Hamilton Award
Who knows better than former New York Mayor Ed Koch that it’s best to stay in New York? Koch has been honored with awards many times, but he considers the Alexander Hamilton Award to be “in a class by itself.” The award was created to celebrate New York and honor those individuals helping to foster the revitalization of our nation’s cities.

K. Rupert Murdoch, chairman of News Corp., also was honored with the award at the 2007 Alexander Hamilton Award Dinner on May 8. This wasn’t the first time the two men have shared a platform.

Murdoch, then publisher of the New York Post, endorsed Mayor Koch in 1977, which Koch believes was the major reason for his election. Koch used the awards dinner to again thank Murdoch for his support, saying he was honored to be alongside him.

“New York is still a city of constant surprises, including our politics,” Koch said. “When I agreed to accept the Alexander Hamilton award, I immediately thought of the reaction of many who participate in politics or follow it closely. Why would a conservative think tank confer the award on Ed Koch, who often refers to himself as a liberal with sanity?”

Koch shared many stories about his time as mayor and explained how those events made him “realize the difference between a liberal and a liberal with sanity. I’ve never regretted recognizing the distinction, and I believe it is why I was able to become mayor of this great city and served it for 12 years. They were the best years of my life in every way.”

The Manhattan Institute’s mission is to “develop and disseminate new ideas that foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility.” For more than 25 years, the group has worked to shape American political culture by supporting and publicizing research on public policy issues including taxes, welfare, crime, the legal system, urban life, race and education.

The institute named its award after Hamilton because, according to the group, he was a fervent proponent of commerce and civic life, and he believed the health of the nation hinged upon vibrant cities, a main goal for the institute. The black-tie fundraiser raised more than $1.3 million for the Manhattan Institute.

“For the common sense you have displayed on so many issues…and with common sense ideas, Alexander Hamilton helped make America work. If only he hadn’t taken that final trip to New Jersey,” Koch said, referring to a fatal duel Hamilton fought with Aaron Burr in Weehawken, N.J., a favorite dueling site of the day. “The moral of the story – stay in New York. Look around us now, at this magnificent space. As the old saying goes, if you leave New York, you ain’t going anywhere. When it comes to life, progress, creativity and excitement, you just can’t beat the Big Apple.”
