Accomplished Trial Lawyer Katya Jestin Joins Jenner & Block as a Partner in the New York Office
High-ranking federal prosecutor Katya Jestin has joined Jenner & Block’s New York office as a Partner in the Firm’s Litigation Department and White Collar Criminal Defense and Counseling Practice. Most recently the Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime & Racketeering Section of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, Ms. Jestin brings to the Firm substantial criminal trial and appellate experience.

“Katya is an outstanding litigator,” said Managing Partner Gregory S. Gallopoulos. “Her impressive background and dynamic character make her a logical addition to the Firm’s highly-regarded White Collar and Criminal Defense Practice.”

Ms. Jestin began her legal career at Proskauer Rose LLP, and served for nearly three years as an Assistant District Attorney at the King County District Attorney’s Office. She joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2001 and became particularly well-known for her successful prosecutions of the members and associates of several influential organized crime families.

Most notably, Ms. Jestin obtained convictions of Peter Gotti and his 16 co-defendants on charges of racketeering, money laundering, wire fraud and extortion for the wide-spread corruption of the International Longshoreman’s Association by the Gambino organized crime family. In recognition of her investigative prowess and exceptional trial skills in this case, Ms. Jestin received the Justice Department’s Director’s Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant United States Attorney.

Ms. Jestin also helped convict the acting boss of the Colombo organized crime family for the murder of a state court judge and a former police officer, as well as the acting boss and three other high-level members of the Genovese organized crime family on charges of racketeering and extortion.

"Katya's superb trial and analytical skills are matched by her uncanny ability to relate to a wide array of witnesses, clients, jurors, and judges,” said Jenner & Block Partner Andrew Weissmann, who previously worked with Ms. Jestin at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and is the one-time Chief of the Justice Department’s Enron Task Force.

Ms. Jestin earned her law degree, cum laude, from Georgetown Law School in 1996, where she was a member of the International Environmental Law Review.

The Common Good: Legal Help For D.C. Artists Gets Creative Legal Business A Smaller Washington Area Lawyers For The Arts Continues To Provide Pro Bono Assistance To Area Residents
Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts is a legal service provider that caters to all things artistic. Through an e-mail referral system, John Lowe, the civil pro bono coordinator at Finnegan Henderson, acts as the group’s executive director. Earlier in WALA’s history the organization was almost forced out of existence due to an economic downturn combined with budget problems. After WALA had to lay off its paid staff, Finnegan Henderson and several other large law firms stepped in to save the organization. “It was obvious to me that if we didn’t take it over it was going to die,” Lowe said. In addition to giving WALA office space, Finnegan Henderson picks up Lowe’s salary and covers the group’s operational costs. WALA is alive, but working at a bare-bones level, with Lowe putting in huge amount of hours coordinating the referral system while a part-time assistant helps with administrative tasks. For Richard Brenin, a fledgling D.C. theater producer, WALA has been “a godsend.”

Baker & McKenzie has advised Lagoon Investments Limited on the sale of the iconic Vatulele Island Resort in Fiji to the New Zealand based partnership, the Waterfront Fund.
